A cargo plane of relief supplies for people affected by Hurricane Irma landed at the V.C. Bird International Airport last Wednesday afternoon. Shipped by air from the Red Cross\u2019 regional warehouse in Panama, the much-needed provisions include blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene, kitchen and shelter kits, as well as other supplies that will meet the needs of around 300 most vulnerable families.<\/p>\n

The President of the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross Society, Michael Joseph, explained that the first stage of distribution of these relief supplies will happen as soon as registrations and needs assessments of people currently staying in shelters and with host families in Antigua are finalized.<\/p>

\u201cRegistrations are crucial to identifying families\u2019 composition and specific needs, which will allow us to be more targeted in our distribution efforts\u201d said Joseph.<\/p>

This process of registration started, Thursday 14 September, and will continue throughout this week. To this end, the organisation asks individuals who are not<\/em> staying in shelters to register between 10am and 4pm, at the Red Cross Headquarters on Lower Old Parham Road, St Johns.<\/p>\n

The Red Cross will continue to work along with all organisations involved in the response to Hurricane Irma to meet the most immediate needs of Barbudans, as well as to accompany them in their journey towards recovery.<\/p>

\u201cAs part of our longer-term recovery efforts, we\u2019re planning to provide a part of these supplies – such shelter kits and tarpaulins – at a later stage, as soon as residents return to Barbuda and start rebuilding their homes, lives and livelihoods\u201d added Joseph.<\/p>\n

Since its establishment in 1941, the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross Society has been committed to assisting people in situations of vulnerability. The recent devastation brought by Hurricane Irma to Barbuda is no exception.<\/p>
