As residents of Barbuda continue to evacuate to Antigua, to ensure their safety and embark on the road to recovery, the United Progressive Party (UPP) stands in full support and solidarity, with all of the residents that have been affected by Hurricane Irma.<\/p>\n

The Party has initiated a Barbuda Relief Drive to facilitate maximum support, with a
\npreliminary focus on soliciting monetary donations, toiletries, linens and non-perishable
\ngoods. Persons are also encouraged to offer accommodations, transportation and any
\nother assistance to Barbudans, as they grapple to cope with a myriad of challenges.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

An official team, led by UPP Political Leader, Harold Lovell that includes UPP Caretaker for
\nSt. John’s City South, Michael Burton, a Barbudan descendant, traveled to Barbuda on
\nFriday. The team offered comfort to the hurricane victims and conducted a full assessment
\nof the damage to determine the most pressing needs and priorities.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“The devastation caused by Hurricane Irma is overwhelming and requires unprecedented
\nnational cooperation. People need food, shelter, medication, toiletries and other personal
\neffects. Children in Barbuda also need to be relocated to another school. The UPP will
\ncoordinate closely with state and local government and agencies to ensure that residents
\nget the immediate relief that they need,” said Senator Harold Lovell, Political Leader of the
\nUPP.<\/p>\n

One fatality has been reported in Barbuda and the UPP mourns the loss of Carl Francis Jr,
\na 2-year old boy whose young life was cut short. The Party offers sincere condolences to
\nhis parents, Carl Francis and Stevet Jeremiah.<\/p>

“To all of our Barbudan family who were impacted by this storm’s devastation, we stand
\nfirmly with you. The UPP is committed to working together with the Government to get
\nBarbuda up and running. We stand ready to pool our resources and networks to ensure a
\nfull and swift recovery. The journey might be long, but we are here for you and we will get
\nthrough this together,” said Senator Harold Lovell.<\/p>\n

The UPP Political Leader also credits the disaster preparedness teams and technical staff
\nfor their dedication, high level of professionalism, coordination and commitment to service,
\nduring the passage of Hurricane Irma.<\/p>

“Across the board, we\u2019ve seen good cooperation and a spirit of service. To the entire team
\nincluding NODS, ABDF, police officers, firefighters, EMS and NSWMA, we thank them for
\ntheir heroic work in ensuring the safety of others. We are also grateful to the Red Cross
\nand hundreds of volunteers, who are currently assisting in the facilitation process,” said
\nSenator Harold Lovell.<\/p>
