The CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) in collaboration with the Centre for Reparation Research (CRR) and the Antigua & Barbuda Reparations Support Commission will convene a one-day symposium in Antigua and Barbuda on the topic, \u201cWestern Banking, Colonialism and Reparations.\u201d<\/p>

The symposium will take place at the Starfish Jolly Beach Hotel on Thursday, Oct. 10,
\nand will explore the historical roots of Western banks in the financing and
\nprofiteering from the enslavement of Africans and their descendants in the
\nDiaspora. The symposium will also identify the role of these banks in the support
\nand expansion of colonial and neo-colonial rule in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

The Hon. Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and Prof. Sir
\nHilary Beckles, Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) and Vice
\nChancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI) will deliver keynote
\naddresses. Other major speeches will be made by Prof. Verene Shepherd, Director of
\nthe Centre for Reparation Research at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and
\nMr. Hans Fassler, an influential Swiss historian.<\/p>

A distinguished group of scholars, historians and reparations activists will
\nparticipate as panelists. They include Dr. Peter Hudson from the University of
\nCalifornia at Los Angeles, Dr. Kris Manjapra from Tufts University, Dr. Kathleen
\nMonteith from the UWI, Dr. Ahmed Reid from the City University of New York, Mr.
\nMalik Al Nassir, author and poet from the United Kingdom and Mr. Armand Zunder,
\nhead of the Suriname Reparations Commission.<\/p>

“The CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) is delighted to be partnering with
\nthe Centre for Reparations Research and the Antigua & Barbuda Reparations
\nSupport Commission on this critical and timely symposium which will bring
\ntogether scholars and experts from around the world to explore the historical
\nconnections between Western banking and enslavement and colonialism and to
\nexamine the adverse impact on the development challenges facing the Caribbean
\ntoday,\u201d said Sir. Hilary Beckles.<\/p>\n

“We are honored to have PM Gaston Browne as one of our main speakers and we
\ncommend him for reaffirming his government’s commitment to reparations in his
\nrecent address to the United Nations General Assembly,\u201d he added.
\nPrime Minister Browne, who is also Antigua & Barbuda\u2019s Minister of Finance, is
\nexpected to describe the challenges to economic and political independence posed
\nby the international finance systems and the current debt crisis in the region. He will
\nvoice the CARICOM\u2019s demand for \u201chistorical and contemporary justice and equity.\u201d
\n\u201cWe extend a warm welcome to this reparations gathering,\u201d said Dorbrene O\u2019Marde,
\nChairperson of the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission. \u201cThis
\ncrucial discussion comes five years after hosting the second CARICOM Reparations
\nConference and we are confident that the deliberations of this symposium will
\ninform the reparatory justice work of the CRC and the governments of CARICOM in
\nthe weeks and months ahead.\u201d<\/p>

“At the end of the symposium, we intend to issue a call to the international financing
\nsector to take responsibility for the role it played in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade
\nand the enslavement of Africans and to engage the global banking system in a firm
\ncommitment to Caribbean development within a reparatory justice framework that
\nrejects the exploitation of the region and promotes ethical best practices rooted in
\nrespectful mutual interest\u201d, said Sir Hilary.<\/p>\n

The symposium comes just weeks after the signing of an historic Memorandum of
\nUnderstanding (MOU) between the University of Glasgow and the University of the
\nWest Indies whereby the two universities agreed to establish the GlasgowCaribbean Centre for Development Research.<\/p>

Through reparatory-oriented policy research, the Centre will address the legacies of
\nslavery and colonialism, and over the next two decades, the University of Glasgow
\nwill commit to spending \u00a320 million as part of its programme of reparative justice,
\nand will work with the UWI to attract external funding for mutually agreed projects
\nthat will benefit the communities of the Caribbean islands and other parts of the
\nworld affected by the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade<\/p>
