DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK<\/p>\n

——————————<\/p>\n

At 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Jose was located<\/p>\n

near latitude 16.3 North, longitude 57.1 West. Jose is moving toward<\/p>\n

the west-northwest near 18 mph (30 km\/h).\u00a0 A gradual turn toward<\/p>\n

the northwest with a decrease in forward speed is expected during<\/p>\n

the next 48 hours.\u00a0 On the forecast track, the center of Jose will<\/p>\n

pass near or east of the northeastern Leeward Islands on Saturday.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Recent data from an Air Force Hurricane Hunter plane indicate that<\/p>\n

maximum sustained winds are near 150 mph (240 km\/h) with higher<\/p>\n

gusts.\u00a0 Jose is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson<\/p>\n

Hurricane Wind Scale.\u00a0 Some fluctuations in intensity are possible<\/p>\n

for the next day or so, and gradual weakening is expected after<\/p>\n

that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the<\/p>\n

center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles<\/p>\n

(185 km).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The minimum central pressure indicated by data from the aircraft is<\/p>\n

942 mb (27.82 inches).<\/p>\n

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND<\/p>\n

———————-<\/p>\n

WIND:\u00a0 Hurricane conditions are possible within the hurricane watch<\/p>\n

area on Saturday, and tropical storm conditions are expected within<\/p>\n

the tropical storm warning areas by Saturday morning. Tropical storm<\/p>\n

conditions are possible in the tropical storm watch area in the<\/p>\n

northeastern Leeward Islands by Saturday morning and in the watch<\/p>\n

area in the Virgin Islands by Saturday night.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

RAINFALL:\u00a0 Jose is expected to produce total rain accumulations of<\/p>\n

3 to 5 inches in the Leeward Islands from Guadeloupe to Anguilla,<\/p>\n

with isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches. Jose is also expected to<\/p>\n

produce total rain accumulations of 1 to 3 inches over the Virgin<\/p>\n

Islands and Dominica. This rainfall will maintain any ongoing<\/p>\n

flooding and may cause additional life-threatening flooding.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SURF:\u00a0 Swells generated by Jose are expected to affect portions of<\/p>\n

the Leeward Islands by later today.\u00a0 These swells are likely to<\/p>\n

cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.\u00a0 Please<\/p>\n
