The Inner City World Cup launched in 1994 in the East End of London and was designed to
\nencourage multicultural grassroots players to represent their origins in the UK.<\/p>

On Sunday 28th July 2019 Leicester hosted its first Inner City World Cup at Victoria Park,
\nLondon Road as part of a nationally-run project celebrating diversity and promoting
\ncommunity integration.<\/p>\n

Despite torrential rain, 184 players from 16 countries representing Leicester-based
\ngrassroots football teams turned out in a powerful show of togetherness and solidarity.
\nAntiqua & Barbuda eventually triumphed, beating Ghana 1-0 in the final ahead of the
\nweekend\u2019s Leicester Caribbean Carnival.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

The tournament has been running for 25 Years with over 30 tournaments and 85 countries
\nbeing represented in London, Liverpool, New York and now Leicester. Antigua and Barbuda
\nbecame the first Caribbean football team to win the tournament.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Other teams taking part included Colombia, Ecuador, England, Eritrea, India, Ireland, Italy,
\nPakistan, Poland, Somali, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand and Turkey.<\/p>\n

The Antigua and Barbuda team was brought together and formed by a local business man
\nLearie Gonsalves (Director of One Building Solution Ltd), Cheddi Gore (National Community
\nEngagement Manager at Sports England), Jorrin John (Former Leicester City and Antigua
\nand Barbuda National team player) and Vince john (Under 17\u2019s Manager at Stoneygate Lions
\nFC)<\/p>

Learie Gonsalves who acted as team secretary said \u201cthat all the players live and where born
\nin the inner city and he felt that the taking part and winning the tournament has been a
\nhuge and positive achievement as it gives a better balanced view of youth activity in the
\nInner City. It has also provided a great sense of pride for the players of their heritage along
\nwith the coming together of the Leicester Community\u2019.<\/p>\n

Learie also said \u201cI would like to thank Event Founder Mark Abery for choosing to put the
\nevent on in Leicester along with Leicester Nirvana FC for supporting the team under
\nLeicester and Rutland County FA rules for entering into a tournament and the respected
\nclubs (Listed below) for allowing the use of their players.<\/p>

Mark Abery founder of the Inner City World Cup, an event growing across the UK, said:
\n\u201cWhat a memorable day \u2013 we were privileged to have been able to bring The Inner City
\nWorld Cup to Leicester which showcased the city for the wonderfully warm and diverse
\nplace it is.<\/p>

\u201cAlready, we can\u2019t wait until next year with more country teams, kids and womens\u2019 football
\nand food stalls planned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lord Willy Bach of the Leicestershire Police Crime Commission, who supported the event
\nwith funding, said: \u201cThis is a fantastic event for Leicester celebrating diversity, community
\nspirit and the power of sport to unite people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had wanted to support this event for a long time and to see it working so well with
\neveryone enjoying themselves is superb.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to congratulate Mark and the organisers of this event for their hard work and
\nvision. Sport not only builds bridges but it also gives young people the motivation to succeed
\nand develop their talents which is urgently needed to deter crime. We\u2019re looking forward to
\nthe Inner City World Cup becoming a permanent fixture in the event calendar in Leicester.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Leicester City FC Captain Matt Elliot, who supported and helped launch the event,
\nadded: \u201cWell done to Antigua & Barbuda but more than the actual winners, The Inner City
\nWorld Cup has celebrated our community spirit and brought together everyone from all
\ndifferent walks of life and so many nationalities centrally in Vicky Park \u2013 its brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Leicester City FC and England Striker Emile Heskey said \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful set up
\nthey\u2019ve achieved with the Inner-City World Cup. I\u2019m so proud that the country of my parents
\nheritage, Antigua and Barbuda won the first tournament held in Leicester. Keep up the good
\nwork:\u201d.<\/p>\n

Current Southampton FC, Striker Che Adams also said \u201cIt\u2019s great to see Antigua and Barbuda
\nwin the Inner-City World Cup and nice to see two members of my family involved (Jorrin
\nJohn and Vince John)
\nAntigua and Barbuda High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill extended congratulations to the
\nteam and commended the organisers for bringing Antiguans and Barbudans in the diaspora
\ntogether.<\/p>\n

\nbeyond the goal of winning, achieve their greatest success by bringing our community
\ntogether and projecting positive news about our shared identity and heritage as Antiguans
