Antigua Gymnastics Club has launched its first ever Women\u2019s Competitive Artistic Gymnastics Team with the aim of representing Antigua in the Pan Ams and eventually the Olympics.<\/p>

Following the Club\u2019s successful training trip to Canada last year, two Canadian national level coaches have now relocated to Antigua to develop our most talented gymnasts. Alex Schlosser and Jess Fylyshtan are Nationally qualified coaches from Ontario, where over their 17 years of experience, they have trained girls to top finishes in Provincial Championships, and competed internationally.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the work of the Antigua Gymnastic club and the talent we have on the island, the coaches are excited to start the competitive program. \u201cWe came to visit the club in Spring 2019, and we took that time to do an evaluation of athletes looking to join the team. We were impressed with the number of talented athletes looking to push themselves to the next level.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

One of the most impressive things we saw was the focus to detail these athletes had already received in their recreational classes. After selecting our team we started off training working on body shaping and injury prevention, this sets us up for success in our full training program. We are looking forward to watching all these athletes grow and reach their maximum potential in gymnastics.\u201d said Alex Schlosser.<\/p>

Outside training, the first step will be to take the girls to Inter-island invitational competitions in Trinidad and Jamaica and then to the USA and Canada.<\/p>\n

In total 20 girls have been selected, ranging in age from 5-12 and they will train for 4-9 hours a week to start in order to perfect the complex and physically demanding moves and routines of International level gymnastics. This is an amazing opportunity for Antigua. For such a small island to have brought in this level of coaching talent is testament to the skill of both the girls and the club.<\/p>

Antigua Gymnastics Club was set up in 2006 by French Gymnast Brigitte Murphy and currently has 196 girls and boys in its recreational program in Coolidge. Brigitte trained as a coach in both the UK and the USA and is passionate about running the club in Antigua \u201cI wanted to give ALL children in Antigua and Barbuda the opportunity to discover and participate in this amazing sport. No matter where they are from, if they show the potential and the commitment we will do everything in our power to give them the chance to reach their ultimate goal\u201d.<\/p>\n
