The Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in London and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority \u2013 UK Office in conjunction with the Lord Taverners \u2013 a UK based charity, hosted a charity dinner recently in honour of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s four cricketing knights, Sir Vivian Richards, Sir Curtly Ambrose, Sir Andy Roberts and Sir Richie Richardson.<\/p>

The dinner, which was held on Wednesday, August 16, sought to raise funds to support the youth and the disabled in sports including supporting the Potters Community Sports Venue Restoration Project. The dinner was held on the eve of the first ever day-night test between the West Indies and England at the Edgbaston Cricket grounds, Birmingham.<\/p>\n

More than 500 guests were in attendance which included cricket legends from the West Indies and England, leaders of industry and commerce, media personalities and members of the Antigua and Barbuda diaspora in England.<\/p>

In her remarks, High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill praised the accomplishments of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s most famed cricketers. She said that despite its small size, Antigua and Barbuda has been able to produce some of the world\u2019s best cricketers since the game\u2019s creation. This is no small feat she noted; one that should be a point of enduring pride for all Antiguans and Barbudans.<\/p>

The High Commissioner further stressed the importance of the game to the socio-economic development of Antigua and Barbuda especially for young people. She reminded the captive audience that cricket has served both as a means of ensuring a healthy lifestyle and a social tool to combat the ills of poverty, crime and deviance.<\/p>\n

The audience then enjoyed an engaging interview of the four knights led by former England Test Captain, David Gower OBE, who quizzed them on highlights of their careers and sought their perspectives on the future of West Indies cricket. The evening climaxed with a live auction which raised nearly \u00a360,000 towards the development of the sport of cricket.<\/p>
