Prime Minister Gaston Browne today appealed to workers in the hotel sector to form their own union after he accused some trade unionists of being on the payroll of hoteliers.<\/p>

Browne was at the time addressing the closure of the Sandals Antigua resort during an emergency meeting of the Lower House.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have the numbers to form yourself into your own trade union movement,\u201d the prime minister told hotel workers.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cI want to recommend that the hotel workers form themselves into the Antigua & Barbuda Hotel Workers Association of Union,\u201d he added.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The prime minister said his government is even willing to pledge financial assistance if the workers organize themselves.<\/p>\n

The majority of hotel workers are currently being represented by the Antigua & Barbuda Workers Union.<\/p>

Browne said the workers are better off taking matters into their own hands since there is a lack of representation from their unions.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, he accused the ABWU of colluding with Sandals to undermine his government, a claim the union denied.<\/p>

The majority of Antigua private sector workers are employed in the hotel sector either directly or indirectly.<\/p>

Sandals Antigua will close for about three months from September to undergo repairs to the property.<\/p>\n
