The Leadership of the United Progressive Party (UPP) reiterates the Party\u2019s support for the establishment of The University of the West Indies\u2019 fourth landed campus in Antigua &amp; Barbuda. Reminding the public that this national journey to higher education began with the UPP Administration, Political Leader Harold Lovell calls the opening of a university here \u201cthe fulfillment of the Party\u2019s own ambition.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWe support the university \u2013 whether UWI or otherwise \u2013 in Antigua, but our issue is the huffing of the Five Islands Secondary School for the university,\u201d Lovell says. \u201cThe question in the public domain is: \u2018Does the Party believe it is better to have no university rather than a university at Five Islands?\u2019 For me, the answer is \u2018No.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Accordingly, the Political Leader will attend the opening ceremony of the campus to publicly demonstrate his stated support. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Dr. Baldwin Spencer, under whose leadership the Five Islands Secondary School was conceptualized and built, will be unable to attend the ceremonial events since he is currently
\nunder medical care.<\/p>

However, Dr. Spencer fully endorses the presence of the UPP Leadership at the various ceremonies, calling it \u201can expression of the Party\u2019s patriotism.\u201d<\/p>

Deputy Political Leader Jamale Pringle will be overseas on Sunday when the opening ceremonies begin. But he certainly would have attended the two-part celebration had he been here, he says. Along with Lovell, Party General Secretary Shawn Nicholas and Dr. Jacqui
\nQuinn, the UPP Minister of Education under whom construction on the Five Islands Secondary began, are \u201cproud Pelicans\u201d \u2013 graduates of The UWI. The two women also express strong support for their alma mater\u2019s presence here.<\/p>\n

Further explaining the significance of the UPP Leadership\u2019s support is Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Leon Chaku Symister: \u201cOur presence indicates that we are consistent. We never opposed having a university,\u201d Symister says. \u201cAnd looking to the future, the UPP
\nsees the need for sustainability of that university, which will need a competent government \u2013 and not a corrupt government.\u201d The former Administration\u2019s planning committee for the establishment of a university in Antigua &amp; Barbuda was headed by well-known
\neducator Juno Samuel.<\/p>
