Prime Minister Gaston Browne has told a ceremony to hand over the chairmanship of the Eastern Caribbean Monetary Council that he\u2019s put measures in place to address high bank charges, de-risking and maintain financial stability.<\/span><\/p>

Speaking in Roseau over the weekend, Browne said the\u00a0<\/span>exchange rate remains strong and stable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this month (July 06), the Currency Union celebrated 41years of exchange rate stability based on the peg of US$1=EC$2.70 set in 1976.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201c<\/span>This is a tremendous achievement for which we ought to be justifiably proud,\u201d the outgoing chairman said.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

During his six-month chairmanship, Browne noted that Non-Performing Loans ratio, a key indicator of asset quality, declined from 17 per cent in 2015 to 11.1 per cent in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Browne, the Bank also made significant strides in operationalising the new Banking Act.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIt has stepped up its supervision including the frequency and timeliness of onsite examinations and submission of these reports to our banks,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>

On the question of de-risking, the prime minister said it remained a \u201c<\/span>major challenge\u201d to the banking system.<\/span><\/p>\n

A rationale provided for De-risking is the small size of transactions with some banks and the high overhead costs of due diligence by the correspondent banks.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Monetary \u201crecommends that our national banks amalgamate to achieve economies of scale and greater efficiency.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

But Browne said non-performing loans in the region remained above the prudential level of 5 per cent. He said in this regard, the operationalisation of the Eastern Caribbean Asset Management Corporation is critical to help reduce the elevated level of non-performing loans in the Currency Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing the issue of bank fees and charges Browne said the Committee established by the Monetary Council to review commercial banks’ fees and charges has delivered its report.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis report, along with the report from the Bankers\u2019 Association is being examined by the Central Bank and will form the basis for further discussions at the level of the Monetary Council.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also said several initiatives to improve access to finance by the private sector are being implemented.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dominica\u2019s Roosevelt Skerrit took over the chairmanship of the monetary council.<\/span><\/p>\n
