An image can increase someone\u2019s engagement<\/a>\u00a0in a story by up to 94%. While this is no surprise, as an image is worth a thousand words, it plays an interesting role in the evolution of visual news. As we move more into a world ruled by images, people have instant access to a variety of powerful photos from all over the world in a matter of seconds. What does this mean for journalism? It certainly enhances the effects of storytelling, but we\u2019re going to have to learn how to harness the power of images to really make them effective.<\/p>\n

What is the Value of an Image?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

What\u2019s actually so powerful about visual storytelling is the fact that the images themselves really have no value. It is the viewer who adds value to the photo. However, there is much value in photojournalism as an art as it allows the reader to immerse themselves in the story they are reading. Photos add emotion to simple words and can provide indications as to what the reader is supposed<\/i><\/em>\u00a0to be feeling. This is crucial in the evolution of journalism, especially in the age of fake news<\/a>.<\/p>

Not only do photos allow a journalist to enhance their storytelling efforts, but they allow them to provide proof of what actually happened. Photojournalism, then, becomes just as much about practicality as it is an art. As we evolve further into a digital world, this increases the value of an image, regardless of who the reader is or what they think of the photo. This is why you\u2019ll see so many journalists accompanying their articles with free infographics<\/u><\/a>\u00a0or some sort of image nowadays.<\/p>

Using Photos to Create Visual News<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Visual journalism is the art of using images to essentially create journalistic pieces. Expert journalists now argue that images are crucial for a photojournalist or even a regular journalist. With the ability to use a simple smartphone to take a photo or the ability to strap a GoPro to your head as you explore a lead, you\u2019re able to record every single aspect of the story. As a journalist, this makes images absolutely crucial for modern-day, accurate reporting.<\/p>\n

They provide you with the ability to remember a detail you might have forgotten.\u00a0They provide you with the ability to revisit the scene of the story and view everything in a calm manner. As news continues to come out at a rapid-fire pace, this makes it easier for reporters to refer back to the story in a way that ensures they\u2019re going to provide their readers with accurate information. In this sense, images are at the core of 21st-century news, whether they were initially \u201cvisual\u201d or not. All<\/i><\/em>\u00a0news is visual news now.<\/p>

Visual news continues to advance and change every single day. Recently, TIME launched their virtual reality app that allows readers to immerse themselves in the scene of a crime or the location of a hot news story without ever leaving their home. While there\u2019s no denying the important role that powerful images play in the future of journalism, it\u2019s hard to say just exactly how far these technological advances will take us. One thing is for certain, however, and that\u2019s the fact that journalists are going to continue to be able to harness the power of photos to enhance their stories.
