The 4-day Tourism Education Workshop for Secondary School Teachers which aimed to enhance the skills of upper form Social Studies teachers when delivering the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Unit on Tourism, officially concluded on Friday, July 5, 2019 at the Trade Winds Hotel.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

The workshop which was hosted by the Ministry of Tourism and Investment in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) was facilitated by the CTO\u2019s Director of Resource Mobilization and Development, Ms. Sharon Banfield- Bovell.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The main focus of the workshop was to introduce social sciences teachers to the principles, concepts and practices relating to tourism and how they can incorporate them into their lesson plans.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

The participants in expressing their appreciation to all partners for the successful hosting of the workshop said, \u201cwe are eager to take our newly gained knowledge back to the classroom to empower our students\u201d.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

Ms. Claudette Moore-Paul, a St. Anthony\u2019s Secondary School teacher, speaking on behalf of the participants stated it was one of the best workshops they have attended as teachers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought the facilitator was very thorough and knowledgeable and we were particularly glad to see someone from within the region speaking to us about Caribbean tourism\u201d, Ms. Moore-Paul said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

During Friday\u2019s closing ceremony, Minister of Tourism and Investment, Charles Fernandez charged the participants to take everything they have learnt back to their classrooms and in doing so remind their students that everything that is important for tourism is important for residents first.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we take pride in protecting our environment, our historical sites and keeping<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

our communities and beaches clean, when tourists visit, they will respect us even more and would want to come back\u201d, Minister Fernandez said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Minister Fernandez also urged the teachers to encourage their students to be<\/p>\n

mindful of what they post on social media as images and videos that depict the island negatively can affect the tourism product.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Acting Manager of the Tourism Education, Training and Awareness<\/p>\n

Unit within the Ministry of Tourism and Investment, Ms. Tracey Browne stated it is imperative that the tools, tips and knowledge gained from the workshop are shared with students as the tourism industry depends on educators to equip future tourism practitioners.<\/p>\n
