A FATHER and son combination proved to be the winning formula for Team Malta which romped to victory in the first day of racing.<\/p>

Richard Schultheis, 14, snared first place in both of Monday\u2019s two races which heralded the start of the 2019 Optimist World Championship.<\/p>\n

Malta is represented by two sailors; Richard and teammate Antonio Gasperini, who turns 14 on July 17.<\/p>

A week of practicing on the water since his arrival in Antigua a week ago paid off for Richard.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Last minute tactical advice delivered dockside by Coach Josef Schultheis, Richard\u2019s father, was straightforward and to the point.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them to be happy, enjoy \u2013 and sail simple. Don\u2019t make things complicated,\u201d Josef said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThe conditions were beautiful out there. The wind was a little tricky because there was a lot of current and shifts which they had to make their way through.<\/p>\n

\u201cRichard sailed at a good speed and played the shifts well.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

But Team Malta will certainly not be resting on their laurels.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just the first day of eight days of racing and there\u2019s a strong fleet here,\u201d Josef continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will see what the conditions are for the rest of the races and adapt to those as well as the competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither will there be any time for exploring the island yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been to Antigua before so I know the island a little but right now we are focusing on the sailing,\u201d Josef added.<\/p>\n

Richard described the wind strength as \u201cmedium\u201d but spoke of \u201ctricky conditions\u201d out at sea.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was hard because I did not know what to expect so I saved my race like I usually do and just went with the shifts – along with the seaweed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The young sailors have had an additional challenge on the water, battling floating blooms of sargassum seaweed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was not too bad today compared to the last two days,\u201d Richard said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was quite a difficult day generally with pretty tough competition but of course it is the world championships and the sailors here are the best from every country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s game plan is to practice his \u201cweak spots\u201d and sail his best.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year\u2019s winner is definitely among the ones to watch,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Close on Richard\u2019s tail in race one was 2018 champion Marco Gradoni, of Italy. Marco took second place in that race and fifth place in race two. USA\u2019s Jack Redmond came second in race two.<\/p>\n
