United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Senator Harold Lovell has written to the Clerk of Parliament, Ramona Small, raising \u201cstrong objection\u201d to the rushed debating of bills.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Senate minority leader\u2019s letter is dated July 13, 2017, the same day that the Credit Reporting Bill was debated in the Upper House.<\/p>\n

In the letter, Lovell notes that a copy of the bill was circulated \u201cless than two clear days before the meeting of the Senate.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

Lovell said he received his bill one day before the sitting.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He charged that this is a \u201cviolation of the Standing Orders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to place on record my strong objection to this continuing practice of rushed legislation where there is little or no time for in-depth preparation and discussion with persons who have a relevant stakeholders interest,” Lovell said.<\/p>

The bill in question will be the subject of public consultations later in the year. It will create a Credit Bureau to assess the credit worthiness of individuals applying for credit.<\/p>\n

Members of Parliament on both the government and opposition side of the House fear that the bill will make it harder for poor people to access credit.<\/p>

The bill has already been passed in the Lower House.<\/p>
