The Ministry of Tourism and Investment has partnered with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Caribbean Tourism Organization is to host a 4-day tourism education workshop at the Trade Winds Hotel for secondary school teachers throughout Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

The workshop is being facilitated by the CTO\u2019s Resource Mobilization and Development Director Ms. Sharon Banfield- Bovell. Banfield Bovell says in recognizing the need for tourism and education to work hand in hand, a workshop program was designed for primary and secondary school teachers to give teachers the skills and knowledge necessary to teach tourism.<\/p>\n

Sessions will focus on introducing the participants to the principles, concepts and practices relating to tourism and how they can incorporate them into their lesson plans.<\/p>

During yesterday\u2019s (TUES) opening ceremony Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Tourism and Investment Mr. Walter Christopher stated that tourism education is vital to the sustainability of the industry, as the need to compete with the global industry imposes a demand for higher standards of service.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cIt is extremely important for secondary school students to be made aware of the importance of the tourism industry and to prepare themselves for the employment opportunities within the industry, particularly at the middle and senior management level\u201d, said PS Christopher.<\/p>\n

Over the next six months, the ministry will expand its reach to primary and secondary schools and offer additional programs to drive awareness and to encourage more students to enter the tourism industry.<\/p>

Acting Manager of the Tourism Education, Training and Awareness Unit \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ms. Tracey Browne said teachers play an important role in the development of students as they influence students\u2019 interest and they should use that influence to encourage students to think tourism from an early age.<\/p>\n

Director of Education, Mr. Clare Browne in acknowledging that tourism is the single most important sector in Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s economy, said it is important to instill the knowledge and skills to youths that will enable them to take the vital sector to a place that would make Antigua and Barbuda the rival of the world and destination of choice.<\/p>
