The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States and Direct Relief have partnered to provide emergency medication supplies to OECS Member States in the event of natural disasters. Director General of the OECS Dr. Didacus Jules and Direct Relief Emergency Response Manager Daniel Hovey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Director General of the OECS, Dr. Didacus Jules, and Officer in charge\u00a0of the OECS Pharmaceutical Procurement Service (PPS), Abraham Weekes, met with Emergency Response Manager at\u00a0Direct Relief, Daniel Hovey, to agree on the partnership which seeks to enhance\u00a0post-disaster response in OECS Member States ahead of the hurricane season.<\/p>\n

Since its creation in 1948, the US based organisation has commited\u00a0to improve the health and lives of populations in emergency situations regardless of\u00a0politics, religion, or ability to pay.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/div>\n

Direct Relief has been providing\u00a0humanitarian aid to over\u00a0100 countries to support\u00a0vulnerable\u00a0populations, especially in the event of natural disasters such as hurricanes or\u00a0earthquakes.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThrough\u00a0this MOU we commit\u00a0to support the OECS Member States in the event of a hurricane or other natural disasters. We will be able to immediately\u00a0supply the affected countries with medicines that are identified by our local partners and sourced\u00a0from our pharmaceutical donors in the US,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Hovey explained.<\/p>\n

Direct Relief collaborated directly with the Ministries of Health in Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of Dominica after the path of the hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The humanitarian aid organisation assessed the\u00a0needs of each country\u00a0and was able\u00a0to rapidly deploy medicine\u00a0to local hospitals to support the post-disaster response, in spite of the\u00a0challenges such as the closure of air and sea ports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The OECS PPS\u00a0plays a critical role in negotiating and sourcing bulk medication to ensure that the citizens of OECS Member States are guaranteed the best possible essential list of medicines at the lowest possible price.<\/p>

OECS PPS will facilitate the collaborative work between Direct Relief and Health Ministries\u00a0of the OECS Member States, as well as medical practitionners and pharmacists in each country to enable the quick\u00a0implementation of emergency supplies ahead of the hurricane season.<\/p>

This partnership forms part of the OECS\u2019 efforts to improve disaster preparedness and response\u00a0in the Eastern Caribbean and complements\u00a0the agreement signed in early June 2019 on Facebook Disaster Maps.<\/p>\n
