The police high command was reported to have taken immediate action to address concerns expressed by Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh, regarding the unprofessional conduct of a female Sergeant of Police, attached to the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court.<\/p>\n

With immediate effect, the officer was reportedly transferred to the St. John’s Police Station after she was told that she had been banned from the Courtrooms.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

Enforcing the ban was Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh who took the position that it was in the best interest of both the Court, the officer, and by extension, the Police Service.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

It was reported that the female Sergeant had exhibited conduct said to be adverse to discipline and to the integrity of the Magistrate’s Courts Court.<\/p>\n

The conduct, described as ‘brawling.’ was said to have been exhibited in the precinct, and to the disturbance of one of the Courts then in session on June 25, 2019.<\/p>

However, no sooner done, the female Sergeant was back at the St. John’s Magistrate Court, the morning after.<\/p>\n

Reliable sources revealed that Chairman of the Police Service Commission Kelvin John had intervened and directed Acting Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney to revisit his decision and to cause the female Sergeant to return immediately to her posting.<\/p>

Constitutionally, the power to transfer personnel resides only with the Police Service Commission (PSC).<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Sources close to these developments revealed that no recommendation for the female Sergeant’s removal was never made to the PSC, forcing it to flex its constitutional muscle upon Commissioner Atlee Rodney who has been acting in that capacity for well over 14 months.<\/p>\n

Administratively, the Commissioner of Police may make recommendations to the body if he wishes to transfer personnel from one department to another. The PSC may or may not approve some recommendations.<\/p>\n
