The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service (ABMS) has for the first time released its own predictions for a hurricane season.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The prediction is for the most part in line with what the major international and reputable organizations have forecasted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt calls for an above normal season with 16 named storms, 7 becoming hurricanes and 4 reaching major hurricane status,\u201d Climatologist Dale Destin announced.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He said the main reasons for the above normal forecast are the warmer than usual tropical North Atlantic and the unlikely development of an El Nino.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThis season could turn our similar to last year\u2019s and be one of the most active since 2010\u201d according to Destin.<\/p>\n

The *AnuMS (Antigua Met Service) anticipates that the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Further, there is a 70% confidence of 11 to 22 named storms, which includes Arlene, Bret and Cindy.<\/p>\n

Four to 10 becoming hurricanes; 2 to 5 becoming major hurricanes.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

According to the inaugural forecast, most of the predicted activity is likely to occur during the peak months of the hurricane season – August-October.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

There is a 60% probability of an above-normal season, 30% probability of a near normal season and a 10% probability of a below normal season.<\/p>\n

Today the Colorado State University said Wednesday it is raising its forecast for the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season and is now expecting above-average activity.<\/p>\n

In May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a 70 percent likelihood of 11 to 17 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher). An average season produces 12 named storms of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.<\/p>\n
