United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Harold Lovell has said that Prime Minister Gaston Browne is to blame now that Antiguans & Barbudans have been hit with visa restrictions by Canada.<\/p>\n

Authorities in the North American country announced today, the end to decades of visa-free access because \u201cAntigua and Barbuda no longer meet Canada\u2019s criteria for a visa exemption.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Lovell says that\u2019s Browne\u2019s fault because his three-year-old administration failed to heed warnings about the \u201creckless management of the Citizenship by Investment Programme.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

For example, Lovell says the government\u2019s short-lived CIP deal for an Iraqi settlement here was \u201cof great concern to the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the Prime Minister said he tried hard to preserve the visa-free arrangement with Canada but knew all along that it could be terminated \u201cat a moment\u2019s notice.\u201d<\/p>

Canada gave Antiguans & Barbudans only one day notice of its intention to halt the regime, which was been seen as a feather in the cap of Antigua\u2019s CIP.<\/p>\n

A founding member of the new Democratic National Alliance is questioning why\u00a0the country\u2019s diplomat in Ottawa and the Prime Minister never informed the nation of Canada\u2019s decision before.<\/p>

Anthony Stuart, a longtime opponent of CIP, is also charging that neither Browne nor Lovell has the moral authority to speak in light of the \u201csad\u201d development.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He holds them jointly responsible for \u201cselling\u201d the country\u2019s citizenship in the first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would have overseen this dilemma which now has many citizens scrambling,\u201d Stuart said.<\/p>\n

The politician is predicting that as the CIP will end as the Antigua & Barbuda passport becomes less attractive as visas to other nations are imposed.<\/p>\n

Political Scientist Peter Wickham told a local radio station that he does not support the view that England will follow Canada.<\/p>\n

He thinks while Canada\u2019s decision is unfair, \u201cbut I don\u2019t think it should surprise any of the leaders that this is the direction that Canada has gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many residents are not happy with the announcement but at the same time, the news hasn’t\u00a0been surprising.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee I knew this would happen,\u201d one woman wrote on Facebook blaming the CIP.<\/p>\n

Some else said \u201cI see UPP cursing ALP over it but it’s been something Canada been considering since UPP times. Was bound to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Prime Minister Gaston Browne, it\u2019s a simple equation loose visa-free access to Canada or forego $150 million in CIP revenues annually.<\/p>\n

Canada says it\u2019s still open to Antiguans and Barbudans but not without a visa.<\/p>\n
