St. Anthony\u2019s Secondary School emerged winners of the Inter-Secondary School Debate Series for the third consecutive year yesterday at the end of the finals of the 2019 series.<\/p>

Jazz Diaz and Vida Betances lead their school to victory, with Antigua Girls\u2019 High School\u2019s Nathania Silston and Shauntay Joseph settling for second place.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the two teams debated the moot \u201cThe government\u2019s move to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes will bring significant benefits to Antigua and Barbuda\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The proposition AGHS in supporting the moot outlined job creation, the health benefits of medicinal marijuana for people living with non-communicable diseases and increased revenue for the government among other points as they set the stage for the encounter with their opponents. St. Anthony\u2019s Secondary though serving as opposition, made known their support for the moot, but raised several concerns where the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes and its benefits nationally are concerned.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The opposition cited the high cost associated with the acquisition of a license and that it will be out of reach for the ordinary Antiguan and Barbudan who may be interested in getting into the marijuana industry. SASS also stated among other points that the industry will likely attract overseas investors whose profits will not remain in the country.<\/p>\n

Their argument along with the rebuttal were enough for Judges Ercil Charles Jr, Susan Jarvis and Adlai Smith to arrive at a final score of 68 (AGHS) and 76 (SASS).<\/p>

A total of twelve public and private secondary schools participated in the 2019 debate competition that was sponsored by Caribbean Union Bank. The financial institution\u2019s General Manager, Karen Harris-Quinland was in attendance at Tuesday\u2019s finals. She offered congratulations to the winning team while presenting them with the trophy.<\/p>\n

The annual Inter-Secondary School Debate Series is a production of the Education, Broadcasting Unit, within the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.<\/p>
