The main opposition St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has defended its decision to walk out of the Parliament on Tuesday claiming that Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has shown \u201cutter contempt and disregard for the people of St. Lucia and the parliament of St. Lucia\u201d.<\/p>

Opposition Leader Phillip J. Pierre told a news conference that the action was taken after the government had moved to prevent opposition legislators from making their contributions to the budget debate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a convention and normal that after an Opposition member speaks, a member of the government responds. Again, we came willing and able to speak to the issues of the budget but the prime minister, in his normal vindictive and spiteful manner, because he has the power of rebuttal, refuses to allow four senior members of his government to speak,\u201d Pierre said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

But Chastanet dismissed the allegations that he had broken convention saying that when the opposition had been given the opportunity to speak, no one wanted to do so and so he closed the debate.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He said that based on the House of Assembly\u2019s Standing Orders there is no speaking order.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo generally, we have said, if in fact we have eleven (members) and they have six then two of my people would go to one of theirs. So if you take that mathematics and apply to the fact that we have done seven already, they\u2019re two speakers behind,\u201d he said, accusing the Opposition of both adhering and abandoning conventions when it suits them.<\/p>

Pierre told reporters that it was the \u201cfirst time\u201d a government\u2019s first budget debate was adjourned by 40 days and warned that such a situation has \u201cserious implications for the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can only say that it was adjourned because of spitefulness and vindictiveness and the prime minister wants to make a point that he is in charge,\u201d he said, adding that the debate had ended without the country hearing from four senior government ministers, including the former prime minister Stephenson King.<\/p>

\u201cWe wanted to hear from Mr King; what is the state of the Gros Islet Highway? What is the state of the Hewanorra Airport? The prime minister did not allow Mr. Stephenson King to speak,\u201d Pierre said, insisting that the SLP would not allow Chastanet to \u201cto run roughshod over us\u201d.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cWe have said to the government that we are not against St. Lucia. We have a responsibility to St. Lucia; 37,000 people voted for us. We want to defend these people\u2026 We want St. Lucia to progress. We want St. Lucia to advance. But the government is callous,[and] it holds the opposition in contempt\u2026 and it believes in victimization.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe point that we are making is that we did not stay in the parliament\u2026we did not give the prime minister the courtesy of listening to him because he has shown utter contempt and disregard for the people of St. Lucia and the parliament of St. Lucia. The Parliament does not belong to the prime minister,\u201d Pierre told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe prime minister will not succeed in quieting the St. Lucia Labour Party. The prime minister will not succeed in sending us into oblivion. We will do all that is legally possible to ensure that democracy prevails in St. Lucia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to go to Parliament because we believe we have to express the wishes of the people of St. Lucia and we have to show the people of St. Lucia the wrongs and the ills of this government,\u201d Pierre added.<\/p>\n
