The government says it will conduct its own investigation into a molasses spill even as it warned the impact will continue to be felt for some time.<\/p>

Antigua Distillery Ltd issued a press release yesterday taking responsibility for the spill.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Department of Environment said in a statement today \u201cit is imperative for the public to note that the Government is investigating the matter, and will closely monitor the water quality and other conditions in the Dredge Bay area over the next several weeks and until the situation resolves.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

It noted that damage to the marine environment has already been observed and recorded. Residents reported several fish turning up dead.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

The environment department said \u201csadly, it is anticipated that impact of the molasses foam spill will continue to be felt for some time.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThe greatest concern is to ensure that the damage is not spread further than the present zone and the public should be assured that all government agencies involved are working to ensure that there are no additional impacts,\u201d the department added.<\/p>\n

Several agencies including fisheries and the disaster officer are working to appropriately manage the recent molasses spill, which took place as a result of activities at the Antigua Distillery located at Rat Island.<\/p>\n
