With the first major competition for carnival ten days away, the Antigua & Barbuda Festivals Commission still does not have an approved budget for carnival.<\/p>

Yesterday, the Cabinet rejected the budget proposed by festival commission chairman Maurice Merchant on the basis that \u201cit was more ambitious than was reasonable at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the Miss Antigua & Barbuda Pageant to be staged on June 25, 2017 the Cabinet asked the responsible parties to \u201creduce the expenditure and to return next week with a budget that would be deemed acceptable under the circumstances.\u201d<\/p>

The Antigua Carnival is 60 years old, having been started in 1957 by several very influential and creative nationals who participated in the 1953 coronation exercise.<\/p>

\u201cThe entire nation will then be joining in celebrating 60 years of Carnival when the first show gets underway,\u201d according to the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cSignificant sums will again be spent to ensure that the ARG is ready to receive the thousands of people who will pour into the historic grounds in order to witness the spectacular events planned for the 60th<\/sup>\u00a0year of celebration,\u201d said Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst.<\/p>
