While many of their peers may still be figuring out which career path they want to pursue in life, Sandals Resorts International (SRI) is assisting five ambitious and driven students of the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute (ABHTI) to pursue future careers in the country\u2019s main industry; tourism.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

As part of its commitment to training the next generation of service industry workers, Sandals hosts interns from around the world at all of its Sandals and Beaches resorts. ABHTI is no exception and, yearly, students have completed training at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa.<\/p>\n

Training and Development Manager Matara Murphy, herself a graduate of the ABHTI, said Sandals is committed to developing people to be successful in the hospitality industry.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThis summer we are preparing to host international and regional interns, local interns, hospitality trainees and Tourism cadets,\u201d she said. \u201cSandals, through our Corporate University, is giving opportunities to team members as well as trainees to learn new skills and fulfill their aspirations.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The ABHTI interns, who started in May, will complete their six-week programme on June 23. They have described the experience as an enlightening and successful one. Nineteen year old Teyon Lake, who is enrolled in the Basic Cookery programme at ABHTI, had the option to choose the hotel or restaurant he was interned at, and said Sandals was at the top of the list.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided to pick Sandals because of the different branches in different countries so you can move from here and go to a different country and work. I wanted that experience,\u201d Lake said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Basic cookery classmate, Zafeek Quammie, said he chose Sandals because of its exclusive global gourmet offerings. Four weeks into his programme, the Herbert\u2019s resident said he has learned so much about food preparation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been good so far. I learned about so many different types of cuisine they have here, like Texan, Asian, Mediterranean and all of those types of food,\u201d the 19-year old said. \u201cI also learned how to deal with the different personalities of different guests.\u201d<\/p>

Unlike the other two aspiring chefs, Regine Marshall has her eyes set on Resort Management and she is training in three different departments \u2013 restaurants, housekeeping, and front office \u2013 while at Sandals Grande Antigua.<\/p>

The other ABHTI interns currently training at Sandals are Jesse Uzoma and Allyssa Vigo both placed in the kitchen department.<\/p>\n
