Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle says the United Progressive Party\u2019s Senate appointments have already received strong public support, expressing confidence that the party\u2019s new senators will serve Antigua and Barbuda with distinction.<\/p>

Speaking during Monday\u2019s swearing-in ceremony at Government House, Pringle said the appointments had been \u201cwell received by the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur senators are assured of widespread support already,\u201d Pringle said. \u201cThe United Progressive Party and I have the utmost confidence in their abilities and in their commitment to the business of state.\u201d<\/p>

Pringle congratulated newly sworn-in senators Chester Hughes, Jonathan Wehner and Ashworth Azille while outlining the experience and qualities each would bring to the Upper House.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He described Senator Chester Hughes as \u201ca political veteran,\u201d \u201ca seasoned parliamentarian\u201d and \u201can unwavering trade unionist advocating for the working class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle also praised Hughes as \u201ca student of law,\u201d pointing to his long involvement in public life and labour representation.<\/p>

Turning to Senator Jonathan Wehner, Pringle described the young senator as \u201ca young man with an old head on his shoulder\u201d and \u201ca gifted communicator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Wehner serves as \u201can example for our youth\u201d and someone young people in Antigua and Barbuda \u201ccan be proud of.\u201d<\/p>

Pringle also commended Senator Ashworth Azille, who he said had been described as \u201cour Martin Luther King,\u201d praising him as another advocate for workers and \u201ca veteran educator with deep commitment to his adopted country.\u201d<\/p>

The Opposition Leader also addressed the absence of Opposition Senator-designate Malaka Parker, explaining that she had travelled on family business and would take her oath at a later date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle said Parker is nearing completion of a law degree and has served in government, the trade union movement and the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe will continue to stand as a model of achievement for our women and girls,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle ended his remarks by encouraging the senators to carry \u201cthe mantle of our great institution proudly and well,\u201d adding: \u201cOur democracy is counting on you.\u201d<\/p>\n
