They contaminate our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/24\/health\/microplastics-food-packaging-study-wellness\">food and water<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a 2024 study found microplastics in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0169772224000640#:~:text=Highlights,%2C%20plastic%20bottles%2C%20and%20packaging.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">83% of tap water<\/a>&nbsp;tested around the world \u2014 and have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/09\/health\/microplastic-risk-reduce-exposure-wellness\">made their way into our bodies<\/a>, including our brains, reproductive organs and cardiovascular systems. Moringa seeds performed even better than alum in more alkaline water, the scientists found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A big advantage of using the seeds compared to alum is that they are renewable, biodegradable, don\u2019t create large amounts of sludge and have fewer toxicity concerns, said Gon\u00e7alves dos Reis. Aluminum can be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8364537\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">toxic at high levels<\/a>&nbsp;and has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/experimental-setup-used-for-nonintrusive-image-acquisition-to-measure-the-pvc-microplastics-floc-size.jpg?c=original&amp;q=w_860,c_fill\" alt=\"Experimental setup used by the scientists to measure the particle size of the PVC microplastics.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Experimental setup used by the scientists to measure the particle size of the PVC microplastics.&nbsp;Dr. Adriano Gon\u00e7alves dos Reis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew Campen, distinguished professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, who was not involved in the research, said using a natural product to replace an aluminum-based filtration system \u201cmay offer a cheaper and more sustainable solution to removal of PVC microplastics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would also avoid the need for aluminum mining, he added, which can have negative environmental consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are limitations, however. Nanoplastics are the very smallest particles, about 1,000th the average width of a human hair, and are most likely to get inside the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gon\u00e7alves dos Reis said he is confident moringa seeds will be effective for different plastics and this is the focus of the groups\u2019 future research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identifying solutions for microplastics now is exceptionally valuable, Campen said.
