Pringle Says He Was \u2018Forged in Fire,\u2019 Declares UPP Ready to Lead Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jamale Pringle declared he was \u201cforged in fire\u201d through internal party struggles, public criticism and political uncertainty, telling supporters his leadership has been tested and that the United Progressive Party (UPP) is now \u201cready from day one\u201d to govern Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

In a sweeping and deeply personal final rally speech delivered on the eve of the April 30 general election, Pringle confronted months of internal division within the UPP and used it as the foundation of his closing argument to voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI stand here as a leader who was forged in fire,\u201d Pringle told a crowd gathered in All Saints.<\/p>

He then detailed the challenges he said shaped his leadership:<\/p>

\u201cThe fire of standing alone and carrying the weight of this party\u2026 the fire of public criticism\u2026 the fire of the leadership contest\u2026 the fire\u2026 of the faction\u2026 by people whom you and I once called brother and sister\u2026 the fire of building back the confidence of you, the voters, one by one\u2026 constituency by constituency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle also spoke of repairing internal relationships within the party, saying he was forged by \u201cthe fire of rebuilding relations and trust, and most importantly\u2026 brotherhood within the party that is called to serve not ourselves\u2026 but to serve you, the people of this great nation.\u201d<\/p>

He argued that those experiences have now prepared both himself and his team for government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter all this\u2026 the United Progressive Party team of candidates is emerging from the fire,\u201d he said.<\/p>

Earlier in the speech, Pringle made a direct claim of readiness for office.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am honored, and I am proud, and I am humbled to stand here tonight leading the team that is not only qualified, but\u2026 ready from day one to lead Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle cast the election as a defining national moment, describing it as a choice between two fundamentally different futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re standing on the verge of an election \u2014 a decision\u2026 one that will decide whether Antigua and Barbuda chooses the light of democracy, opportunity, justice and prosperity\u2026 or this country continues on its dark path of corruption, self-enrichment and bribery,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe choice is yours,\u201d he added. \u201cThis is a critical moment in the history of Antigua and Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle also addressed expectations that the UPP would struggle in the election, referencing predictions by Prime Minister Gaston Browne of a sweeping victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe said he was going to sweep the election \u2014 17-9,\u201d Pringle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I know the people of Antigua and Barbuda\u2026 they\u2019re going to send a clear message,\u201d he added, dismissing the forecast as attention-seeking rhetoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that the UPP had proven its resilience during the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn which Gaston Browne believed we would not even muster a fight\u2026 but we are ready for you,\u201d Pringle said, drawing cheers from supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UPP leader accused the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) of attempting to influence voters through giveaways and intimidation tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe ridiculed us\u2026 they tore down our posters and billboards\u2026 they bribed and treated the people with money \u2014 electronic food vouchers\u2026 gas vouchers\u2026 all these giveaways,\u201d Pringle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He questioned the timing of such spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had to wonder if Gaston Browne knows he\u2019s going to lose the election\u2026 because why would he try to dry out the treasury before the UPP gets into office?\u201d Pringle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A central theme of Pringle\u2019s address was the role of voters, whom he repeatedly told hold ultimate authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe power lies in you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd you should not be afraid to use the power given to you,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are your servants\u2026 and when you elect men and women to administer over the affairs of this country, they must answer and report to you, the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He promised a shift in governance style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are offering you a government that works for you\u2026 a government that listens to you,\u201d Pringle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UPP CROWD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A significant portion of the speech focused on sports, which Pringle described as a unifying force and a priority under a UPP administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSport is one area that transcends all other things that divide us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to pledge to you\u2026 that sports will receive priority under the UPP administration,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He outlined plans to transform the Mock Pond playing field into a national training facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a dream\u2026 to transform what we have known into a well thought out sporting facility\u2026 a facility for training\u2026 for club competition\u2026 for development of our talented young people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed facility would include \u201cchanging rooms, exercise spaces and\u2026 parking for families and fans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle also proposed a broader national sports development strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOthers will be established around the country depending on the dominant sport in the community,\u201d he said, citing basketball, tennis and football facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the UPP plans to launch \u201cunder-20 tournaments and bi-annual parish games\u2026 by year three of its first term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle said his plans for the Sir Vivian Richards National Sports and Entertainment Complex had already attracted private investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe received our first pledge\u2026 a commitment of one million dollars,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTwo other businessmen jumped on board and pledged another million each,\u201d he added, bringing total commitments to $3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you put people first, the benefactors will line up to support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pringle repeatedly contrasted his approach with what he described as self-serving leadership under the current administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not about self-enrichment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe resources of state will be used not for our own enrichment purposes\u2026 but for the benefit of every Antiguan and Barbudan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are serious about leading this country\u2026 serious about developing this country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no forward movement of Antigua and Barbuda without the people of Barbuda sitting at the table,\u201d he said.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe believe not in Antigua\u2026 we believe in Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He formally endorsed all UPP candidates and extended support to Barbuda People\u2019s Movement leader Trevor Walker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are a team, united to serve your interests,\u201d Pringle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing his address, Pringle issued a direct appeal to voters to deliver a decisive mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis Monday\u2026 it\u2019s a serious mandate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
