A constituency decided by just six votes in the last general election is again drawing national attention, as incumbent ABLP candidate Melford Nicholas says he expects a stronger showing when voters return to the polls on April 30.<\/p>

Nicholas, who narrowly retained St. John\u2019s City East in 2023 by a margin of 791 to 785, acknowledged the tight result but argued it came during a broader swing against his party. He told ABS Television\u2019s Know Your Candidates<\/em> programme that the political environment has since shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was able to prevail even against a 20% swing,\u201d Nicholas said, referring to the last election cycle. \u201cThis election is a different election\u2026 you may well find that the swing has come back to the Antigua Labour Party.\u201d<\/p>

He declined to predict an exact margin but said he is confident the outcome will be more decisive this time around.<\/p>

\u201cI think I will do much better\u2026 I know that we\u2019re going to do much better in St. John\u2019s City East,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. John\u2019s City East has long been regarded as a political bellwether, with Nicholas noting that no government has been formed in Antigua and Barbuda without winning the constituency since 1971. That history has placed added scrutiny on the race, which pits him against the United Progressive Party\u2019s Pearl Quinn Williams.<\/p>

The seat\u2019s significance is heightened by its role in reflecting broader national trends, particularly in closely contested elections. Nicholas said that while the six-vote margin has been widely cited, it should be viewed in the context of overall voter movement at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is to be remembered\u2026 there was a palpable swing against the Antigua Labour Party,\u201d he said, adding that despite that trend, his support base held.<\/p>
