St. John\u2019s Rural West candidate Michael Joseph said the government is working to ensure universal access to healthcare, declaring that medical services must be treated as a fundamental right rather than a privilege.<\/p>

\u201cThis government believes that healthcare is not a privilege for a few, but a right for every citizen,\u201d Joseph said during his address at the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) manifesto launch at the American University of Antigua Conference Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph, a Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, said the administration is shifting its approach to healthcare by strengthening access and focusing on prevention.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn health, we are not simply managing illness \u2014 we are transforming it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are strengthening primary healthcare so that no citizen is left behind because of geography or circumstance.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He said efforts are underway to modernise services and improve resilience across the healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are improving access, modernising services and building resilience into our hospitals and our clinics\u2026 in order to respond to everyday needs and extraordinary challenges,\u201d Joseph said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The candidate also pointed to a greater emphasis on preventative care and public awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are currently placing greater emphasis on preventative care\u2026 on fighting non-communicable diseases, on mental health awareness and on promoting wellness,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA healthy nation is not built on hospitals alone\u2026 it is built in our homes, in our schools and in our communities.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Joseph\u2019s remarks formed part of a broader presentation on health and environmental policy under the party\u2019s \u201cRenaissance\u201d manifesto, which he said is focused on long-term sustainability and national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing environmental concerns, he described climate change as an immediate and ongoing threat to Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe do not debate whether climate change is real. We live its reality,\u201d he said, citing rising temperatures, changing weather patterns and increased vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph said the government is responding through a range of measures, including strengthening climate resilience, protecting marine ecosystems and improving waste management systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are building not just infrastructure, but resilient infrastructure\u2026 not just policies, but sustainable progress,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Antigua and Barbuda is taking a proactive stance internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not waiting on the world \u2014 we are doing our part and we are leading where we can,\u201d Joseph said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph also used the platform to highlight the role of youth in governance, noting that his appointment reflects a deliberate effort to include younger voices in leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe future cannot be built without the youth of this nation at the table,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the government is committed to combining experience with innovation as part of its development strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are part of a generation that is not waiting for change \u2014 we are participating in it,\u201d Joseph said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Framing the message within the party\u2019s campaign, he said the manifesto represents a continuation of policies aimed at improving quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is about a government that is investing in health because it values life, protecting the environment because it values future generations, and empowering young leaders because it believes in continuity, stability and renewal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
