Thousands gathered in the square to hear Leo\u2019s message, with one group holding up a poster in Italian: \u201cPope Leo we are with you, guide our future.\u201d<\/p>

The pontiff said the power of Easter \u2013 when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead \u2013 is \u201centirely nonviolent.\u201d<\/p>

Leo also used his Easter Sunday message to announce a special prayer vigil for peace in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, on Saturday, April 11. The late Pope Francis organized a similar vigil in 2013 for Syria \u2013 <\/strong>to rally against the civil war and reject military intervention \u2013 which was attended by around 100,000 people.<\/p>

After delivering his message, Leo wished people a happy Easter in 10 languages, including Arabic, Chinese and Latin. He then said the Regina Coeli <\/em>prayer and gave the traditional Urbi et Orbi<\/em> blessing, meaning \u201cTo the City and to the World.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Good Friday, the first US-born pontiff carried the cross for the entirety of the \u201cWay of the Cross\u201d service in Rome\u2019s Colosseum, where worshipers heard prayers for deported immigrant children, along with a warning to world leaders that their actions will be judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Sunday, thousands gathered for the Easter Mass and message in a sunny St. Peter\u2019s Square, which, per tradition, has been decked out with flowers and bulbs for the celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in the day, in his Easter homily, Pope Leo focused on retaining hope amid the violence of war<\/a>, climate change and other suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pontiff said the message of Easter responds to \u201cthe cry of pain that rises from every corner because of the abuses that crush the weakest among us, because of the idolatry of profit that plunders the earth\u2019s resources, because of the violence of war that kills and destroys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
