Dear Editor,<\/p>

There is a growing reality in St. Mary\u2019s South that many residents are no longer whispering about, but saying plainly: representation cannot happen in absentia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelvin Simon won a by-election. That is a fact. But elections are not the job. They are the interview. What follows is the work, and that is where the concern now lies.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Across Bolans, Urlings, Johnson\u2019s Point, and the surrounding communities, the issues are not theoretical. Roads need attention. Drainage remains a concern. Community spaces require upkeep. Young people need direction. Families need support. These are not new problems, and they are not unique. What is becoming increasingly difficult to understand is the absence of a clear, consistent, visible effort from the person elected to represent them.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Instead, what St. Mary\u2019s South appears to have is commentary without continuity. Visibility without grounding. Presence everywhere except where it matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being in Opposition is often used as a shield, but it is not a valid excuse. If anything, it is where leadership should be most visible. It is where initiative matters. It is where representatives prove whether they can lead without relying on government machinery.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And yet, even within the same Opposition, that excuse does not hold up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard Lewis, operating under the same constraints, has demonstrated that it is entirely possible to remain engaged, vocal, and present in both national issues and constituency matters. The difference is not resources. The difference is approach.<\/p>

So again, the question returns: why not St. Mary\u2019s South?<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What makes the situation even more striking is that some of the most consistent community engagement has not come from the sitting MP at all. Emanuel Peters, serving only in a caretaker capacity, has been visible, active, and responsive in ways that residents can see and point to. No title. No parliamentary seat. Just work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That contrast is not political spin. It is lived experience within the constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a growing perception that priorities are misplaced. While constituents look for presence on the ground, what they see instead is a pattern of external visibility that does little to address local realities. Travel, appearances, and participation in events abroad may have their place, but they cannot replace the day-to-day responsibility of constituency representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An MP is not elected to orbit the role. An MP is elected to occupy it fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there is Parliament itself. Representation is not just about what happens in communities. It is also about what happens in the chamber. Advocacy, debate, presence, and accountability all matter. When constituents begin to question whether their representative is showing up with the consistency expected, that is not a minor issue. That is the core of the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, the concern in St. Mary\u2019s South is no longer about potential. It is about performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the truth is simple: people know when they are being represented, and they know when they are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They know when issues are followed up.
They know when someone is present.
They know when leadership is active versus when it is reactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And increasingly, the sentiment is shifting toward a single conclusion, that the constituency deserves more than commentary, more than sporadic visibility, and more than symbolic representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It deserves leadership that is grounded, consistent, and accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because in the end, the standard is not complicated. If the people have to ask where their MP is, then something is already wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Mary\u2019s South cannot be represented from a distance. It requires presence. It requires work. And right now, too many residents are still waiting to see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
