The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus will host its 2026 Council Meeting and media conference on Thursday, March 26, bringing together university leadership, stakeholders and the media for a comprehensive review of the institution\u2019s performance and future direction.<\/p>

The session, scheduled for 10 a.m. Eastern Caribbean time at the Five Islands Campus cafeteria in Antigua and Barbuda, forms part of UWI\u2019s annual cycle of council meetings held across its campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chair of the Five Islands Campus Council Sir Aziz Hadeed will preside over the meeting, while Campus Principal Professor C. Justin Robinson will present the Annual Report for the 2024\u20132025 academic year under the theme \u201cBuilding Beyond Borders: Expanding Our Regional Reach.\u201d The programme will also include remarks from Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, followed by a question-and-answer segment with the media.<\/p>

The public session and media conference will be carried live on UWItv and streamed via YouTube, allowing regional and international audiences to participate. Media representatives can also request access to the open session via Zoom and submit questions in advance or during the broadcast.<\/p>

The Five Islands meeting comes at the close of a series of campus-level council sessions that began earlier this month. UWI officially launched its 2026 cycle of Annual Council Meetings on March 6 at its Mona Campus in Jamaica, where Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Densil Williams delivered a presentation outlining the university\u2019s performance over the past academic year, including research output, business development, student data and engagement initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequent meetings were held at Cave Hill Campus on March 13, the Global Campus on March 18, and the St. Augustine Campus on March 25. The series will culminate with the University Council Meeting scheduled for May 8.<\/p>

Across the regional system, the council meetings serve as a key governance mechanism, allowing each campus to present operational, financial and academic updates, review accountability reports and engage stakeholders on strategic priorities. As a publicly funded institution serving 17 Caribbean governments, UWI has described the annual public broadcasts as part of its commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible stewardship of public resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each session includes detailed reporting on institutional performance for the 2024\u20132025 academic year, as well as discussions on future initiatives and regional impact.<\/p>

This year\u2019s meetings are taking place against the backdrop of UWI\u2019s continued recognition in the Times Higher Education rankings, where the institution is positioned among the top 3.6 percent of universities worldwide, out of an estimated 35,000 institutions. UWI remains the only English-speaking Caribbean university featured across multiple THE ranking categories, including the World University Rankings, Golden Age Rankings, Latin America Rankings and Impact Rankings, which assess contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>

Founded in 1948 as a university college of the University of London with just 33 medical students, UWI has grown into a globally respected institution with nearly 50,000 students. The university now operates five campuses\u2014Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, Cave Hill in Barbados, Five Islands in Antigua and Barbuda, and the Global Campus\u2014along with international partnerships across North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UWI offers more than 1,000 academic programmes across disciplines including engineering, law, medical sciences, social sciences, humanities, education, agriculture and the creative arts. It also continues to expand its global reach through initiatives such as the International School for Development Justice, an online graduate business school focused on preparing leaders for sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
