Regional pollster Peter Wickham says the outcome of the St. Philip North by-election may present an opportunity for Prime Minister Gaston Browne to consider calling an early general election, pointing to what he described as a strong showing by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and a weakened opposition.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCertainly, if I were in a position to press the electoral button, I would be attempting to do that,\u201d Wickham said, adding that he is now \u201cpersuaded\u2026 that it\u2019s something that the Prime Minister ought to consider.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wickham described Randy Baltimore\u2019s victory as highly significant, noting that the ABLP secured one of its strongest performances in the constituency in decades. \u201cEverything is impressive about this victory\u2026 he\u2019s on 70%, 69%. It is among the highest levels of support that the ABLP has ever gotten in that constituency,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He pointed to what he called a major political shift, adding, \u201cHis personal swing is 16% in favor of the ABLP\u2026 this is essentially almost a reversal of what the ABLP experienced in the last general election.\u201d According to Wickham, the result signals that \u201cthe ABLP is definitely back,\u201d with Baltimore entering Parliament \u201con a fairly high note.\u201d<\/p>

Wickham also highlighted voter participation, saying turnout was \u201calmost 70%\u2026 quite impressive, quite high, and consistent with the fact that Antiguans took this election pretty seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning to the opposition, Wickham said the United Progressive Party (UPP) is facing significant challenges. \u201cClearly the UPP is on the back foot. This is the weakest that they have been in a while,\u201d he said, arguing that the current political environment may offer \u201cfew opportunities that will be as attractive as this for ABLP\u201d as it eyes a potential fourth term.<\/p>

He added that the scale of the defeat raises broader leadership questions within the UPP, suggesting that party leader Jamale Pringle may need to reflect on his position. \u201cTonight was as much about Jamale Pringle as it was about Randy Baltimore\u2026 and Randy Baltimore won, and he won well,\u201d Wickham said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wickham also referenced the legacy of former MP Sir Robin Yearwood, noting that the constituency\u2019s strong support for Baltimore is \u201ca credit\u201d to Yearwood\u2019s long-standing influence, calling it \u201cfairly impressive\u201d that the transition was endorsed so decisively by voters.<\/p>
