has delivered a compelling case before a United Nations meeting for gender equality to be fully<\/p>\n\n\n\n

aligned with the ambitions of climate finance.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Saunders is a senior member of the delegation that represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 70th<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). As countries like Small Island<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developing States (SIDS) especially, push for greater ambition on climate finance, Saunders stressed<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

that climate change is not gender neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made the point during a side event featuring a prestigious panel of speakers on Advancing<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Climate Justice through Gender-Responsive Climate Finance. He used the opportunity to outline<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

the government\u2019s policy on this very issue and shared his views on how inclusive climate financing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

can serve as a powerful tool in advancing gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWomen\u2014particularly rural women, single-parent households, and women in informal economic<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sectors\u2014often experience disproportionate impacts and face greater barriers in accessing resources,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

financing, and decision-making,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing a broad range of examples as to what needs to be done, he pointed to the standout initiatives<\/p>\n\n\n\n

where Antigua and Barbuda is demonstrating leadership in advancing climate justice through the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

principle of gender-responsible climate finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated gender responsiveness is integrated into the country’s climate governance architecture and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) as a matter of policy. This means that a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

number of goals are prioritized to include increasing the number of women-led businesses<\/p>\n\n\n\n

implementing renewable energy and climate adaptation solutions, supporting women’s economicrecovery following extreme weather events, and promoting a gender-responsive transition in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

traditionally male-dominated sectors such as energy and construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cited the adoption of the Sustainable Island Resource Framework Fund (SIRF Fund),<\/p>\n\n\n\n

established through the country\u2019s Environmental Protection and Management Act (2019) and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

administered by the Department of Environment of Antigua and Barbuda as another relevant<\/p>\n\n\n\n

example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThrough mechanisms such as its blended finance window, the fund helps expand access to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

climate-related investment for women-led businesses and enterprises, ensuring women are not<\/p>\n\n\n\n

only beneficiaries but also drivers of climate solutions,\u201d Saunders explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While contributing to the discussions, Saunders further detailed other initiatives that he said were<\/p>\n\n\n\n

advancing gender-responsive climate action in strengthening community resilience, support<\/p>\n\n\n\n

women\u2019s leadership in agriculture and climate adaptation, and expand training and outreach across<\/p>\n\n\n\n

vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meantime, Minister of State in the Ministry of Works and Housing and Leader of Government<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business in the Senate, the Hon. Shenella Govia, described her participation in CSW80 as a truly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

moving and rewarding experience. She noted it was important for Antigua and Barbuda to stand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

alongside other nations in sharing progress and collectively seeking solutions to accelerate the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

advancement of gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis only reinforces the importance of working together to advance gender equality for women and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

girls everywhere. I am especially proud of our delegation whose active participation in the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

discussions will help inform and strengthen our policies and initiatives in Antigua and Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
