CNN<\/strong>– Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel says officials held talks with the United States, with the island facing an economic crisis and intense pressure from Donald\u00a0Trump<\/a>.<\/p>

The president said the talks with the US were led by him, along with former president Ra\u00fal Castro and some members of his Communist Party, although he did not specify who participated on behalf of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are international factors that have facilitated these talks,\u201d D\u00edaz-Canel said in a video broadcast Friday on national television, describing the purpose of these talks to \u201cidentify the bilateral problems that need a solution.\u201d<\/p>

Trump himself has said on several occasions that Washington was holding talks with Cuban representatives but this is the first confirmation from Havana. CNN has asked the White House and State Department for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u00edaz-Canel said: \u201cThis is a very sensitive process that is being approached with responsibility and great sensitivity.\u201d<\/p>

Following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in a US operation earlier this year, Trump cut off Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba and threatened to impose tariffs on other countries that sold crude oil to the island. This only worsened the frequent blackouts and fuel shortages facing Cubans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week Trump told CNN Cuba is \u201cis gonna fall pretty soon\u201d and that the government wants \u201cto make a deal so badly.\u201d<\/p>

The Cuban president said the critical situation facing the island \u201chas to do with the energy blockade\u201d imposed by the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a situation for which we have been preparing in advance,\u201d he said, although he emphasized that \u201cno fuel has entered the country for three months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe impact (of the blockade) is tremendous. It is most brutally manifested in these energy issues,\u201d the president said. \u201cThis causes anguish among the population,\u201d he acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u00edaz-Canel said healthcare had been particularly hard hit. \u201cRight now in the country there are tens of thousands of people waiting for surgery that cannot be performed due to the lack of electricity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
