United Progressive Party candidate Alex Browne says the Rupert \u201cKing Swallow\u201d Filo Highway should remain unchanged, arguing that the roadway honors one of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s most influential cultural figures.<\/p>

Speaking during an interview on Observer Radio ahead of the March 16 St. Philip\u2019s North by-election, Browne said the highway must continue to carry the name of the late calypso legend Sir Rupert \u201cKing Swallow\u201d Philo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRupert \u2018King Swallow\u2019 Philo is a national icon whose contribution to our culture and music cannot be overstated,\u201d Browne said. \u201cThat highway should remain in his name as a permanent tribute to his legacy.\u201d<\/p>

Sir Rupert \u201cKing Swallow\u201d Philo, widely regarded as one of the Caribbean\u2019s most celebrated calypsonians, died in September 2020 at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness. He rose to prominence with songs blending social commentary and political satire, beginning with the track \u201cRaphael Trujillo.\u201d<\/p>

Over decades in the music industry, Swallow produced numerous hits including Fire in the Backseat<\/em>, Subway Jam<\/em>, Party in Space<\/em> and Satan Coming Down<\/em>, earning admiration from audiences across the Caribbean and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He captured Antigua\u2019s calypso crown four times\u2014in 1973, 1977, 1978 and 1985\u2014and won the Road March title five times, cementing his reputation as a dominant force in both calypso and soca.<\/p>

Swallow was later knighted by Antigua and Barbuda in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country\u2019s cultural development and the art form of calypso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne said preserving the highway\u2019s name would ensure that younger generations remain aware of the cultural impact of the late artist.<\/p>

\u201cKing Swallow helped shape the soundtrack of Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d Browne said. \u201cHonouring him in this way keeps that history alive.\u201d<\/p>
