Antigua and Barbuda Marks Commonwealth Day as Nation Prepares to Host CHOGM 2026<\/strong><\/p>

Antigua and Barbuda joined countries across the Commonwealth on Monday in observing Commonwealth Day, with Head of the CHOGM 2026 Taskforce Dr. Clarence E. Pilgrim highlighting the importance of peace, cooperation and shared values among member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a message marking the occasion, Pilgrim said the annual observance celebrates the bonds that connect nearly one-third of the world\u2019s population across continents and oceans through a voluntary association built on mutual respect and cooperation.<\/p>

\u201cAt the very heart of the Commonwealth lies a fundamental and enduring principle: peace among nations,\u201d Pilgrim said. \u201cFor decades, this voluntary association has provided a trusted forum where dialogue prevails over division, diplomacy replaces confrontation, and shared values such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law guide collective action.\u201d<\/p>

Pilgrim said the commitment to peaceful cooperation remains one of the defining pillars of the Commonwealth, particularly in a time of global uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s Commonwealth Day holds added significance for Antigua and Barbuda as the country prepares to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2026<\/strong>, which is expected to bring together heads of government, ministers, youth leaders, business representatives and civil society from across the 56-member bloc.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pilgrim described the gathering as the largest international conference ever to be held in Antigua and Barbuda and said it will place the country at the center of global discussions about the future of the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCHOGM 2026 presents a historic opportunity to reinvigorate the Commonwealth and to chart a bold new roadmap for cooperation, peace and sustainable prosperity among its member states,\u201d he said.<\/p>

Pilgrim added that the meeting could help strengthen confidence in multilateral partnerships at a time when global institutions are facing increasing pressure.<\/p>

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is held every two years and brings together leaders from member countries to discuss global challenges, development priorities and cooperation across the Commonwealth.
