Cabinet has approved more than $2 million for the purchase of additional pipes as the government moves to address persistent water supply problems caused by aging infrastructure across Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

Officials said the funding will support ongoing efforts by the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) to replace deteriorating water lines that are unable to withstand increased water pressure following major investments in water production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the issue was discussed during the latest Cabinet meeting, where officials were briefed on the challenges facing the water distribution network.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe aging pipes is a concern for APUA and they are doing their best in replacing these pipes,\u201d Merchant said during the Cabinet briefing.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He explained that although the country has significantly expanded its water production capacity in recent years, older sections of the pipeline system are struggling to handle the increased pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGovernment has invested a lot in water \u2014 11 plus million imperial gallons per day \u2014 never before in the history of Antigua and Barbuda has that been accomplished,\u201d Merchant said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

However, he noted that the improved supply has also exposed weaknesses in the aging network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe increase in the production of water and the water pressure increases, and the old pipes\u2026 cannot take the pressure and so you have leaks popping up every single place in Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Merchant said Cabinet has approved additional funds to accelerate pipe replacement.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAdditional pipes and additional monies have been granted to APUA \u2014 over $2 million just this week \u2014 for the ordering of additional pipes to deal with this problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials acknowledged that the work may cause inconvenience in some communities as repairs and replacements are carried out, but said the upgrades are necessary to stabilize water supply across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merchant said the government and APUA are asking for patience from the public while the extensive network of aging pipelines is gradually replaced.<\/p>\n
