Across Antigua and Barbuda, our young people are growing up in an era Daniel foresaw when he wrote, \u201cKnowledge shall increase.\u201d Knowledge has indeed exploded \u2014 but wisdom has not kept pace, and our children are paying the price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this year\u2019s Focus on Family Life in one of our local congregations, I shared a message titled, \u201cSaving the Family in a Digital World<\/strong>.\u201d Today, I want to speak directly to two groups who bear the greatest responsibility in this moment: our children<\/strong>, and the adults who guide them<\/strong> \u2014 parents and teachers.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Digital World Is Reshaping Childhood<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Children today swipe before they speak. They learn to tap screens before they learn to tie their shoes. They are surrounded by devices that entertain, educate, and connect \u2014 but also distract, distort, and endanger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The digital world is like fire: useful when controlled, destructive when left unattended.<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What we are seeing among our children:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Shorter attention spans<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Declining academic performance<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Difficulty focusing in class<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Increased irritability and anxiety<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Exposure to harmful content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Less interest in reading, chores, and real-life activities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Weakened social skills and empathy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many teachers across the island quietly admit: \u201c<\/strong>We are not just teaching children anymore \u2014 we are competing with screens.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is not just a Caribbean concern. Around the world, governments are waking up to the dangers children face online. In Australia, several states have already banned mobile phones in schools, and national leaders are calling for agebased restrictions on social media because of its impact on children\u2019s mental health. When entire countries begin taking such bold steps, it tells us something: this is not a small issue \u2014 it is a global crisis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Story That Reflects a Nation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A father recently shared a moment that has stayed with me. He was driving with his young son, hoping to talk, hoping to connect. But the boy\u2019s eyes never left the glowing screen in his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSon, can we talk?\u201d the father asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without looking up, the child replied, \u201cJust a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That minute never came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later the father told me, \u201cI realized I was losing my son \u2014 not to bad company, not to the streets, but to a screen.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This quiet heartbreak is happening in cars, living rooms, and bedrooms across our nation. It is a warning we cannot ignore. We cannot continue like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Things Every Child Needs in This Digital Age<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Discernment \u2014 <\/strong>Teaching Them to Choose What Is Good<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children must learn to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 \u201cIs this good for me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 \u201cDoes this honor my values?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 \u201cIs this true?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 \u201cIs this safe?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everything online is evil \u2014 but not everything is good. Discernment is the shield that protects the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Boundaries \u2014 <\/strong>Because Children Cannot Raise Themselves<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children need structure. They need limits. They need guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healthy boundaries include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 No devices during meals<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 No screens before bedtime<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 No phones in bedrooms<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Time limits for social media and gaming<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Ageappropriate filters and monitoring<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Regular conversations about online behavior<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A home without digital boundaries is like a house without doors \u2014 anything can walk in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Positive Role Models \u2014 <\/strong>Children Become What They See<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents cannot tell children to \u201cget off the phone\u201d while scrolling endlessly themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your digital habits become their digital future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 How to use technology responsibly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 How to speak respectfully online<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 How to choose uplifting content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 How to balance screen time with real life<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children imitate what they observe, not what they hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hidden Impact on School and Behavior<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital intrusion affects more than entertainment \u2014 it affects learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers report that many children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Struggle to sit still<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Have difficulty reading long passages<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Lose interest quickly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Rush through assignments<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Prefer screens over books<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Become frustrated when tasks require patience<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not misbehavior \u2014 it is overstimulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brain becomes conditioned to constant excitement, making normal classroom learning feel \u201cboring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Parents Can Protect Their Children Starting Today<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are simple steps every household can begin immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Create a family digital plan<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Set daily screen limits<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Keep devices in shared spaces<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Talk openly about online dangers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Encourage reading, outdoor play, and chores<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Use parental controls and filters<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Model healthy digital habits<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Pray with your children and guide them spiritually<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children do not need perfect parents \u2014 they need present parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Final Word<\/strong>: <\/strong>The digital age is here to stay. Our children will grow up with technology \u2014 but they do not have to be consumed by it. If we teach them discernment<\/strong>, set boundaries<\/strong>, and model wisdom<\/strong>, they will not be swept away by the digital tide.
