February 23 holds special significance for Rotarians worldwide. It marks the anniversary of the very first Rotary meeting in 1905, when Paul Harris and three colleagues gathered in Chicago. What began as a simple idea among four individuals has since grown into a global movement dedicated to service, fellowship, and peace. Today, that founding moment is commemorated as World Peace and Understanding Day.<\/p>

In observance of this meaningful occasion, members of the Rotary Club of Antigua, the Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown, and Rotaract came together in worship and reflection at a special joint church service held on Sunday, February 22, at the Cashew Hill Moravian Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service brought Rotarians and Rotaractors together in a spirit of unity, underscoring Rotary\u2019s enduring commitment to promoting peace, goodwill, and international understanding. It served as a powerful reminder of the organization\u2019s global mission to build bridges of friendship and service across communities and cultures.<\/p>

Scripture readings were delivered by Vice President Athlyn Davis of the Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown and President Elisa Graham of the Rotary Club of Antigua. Their participation symbolized the strong partnership and shared purpose that define the Rotary family in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

Reflecting on the significance of World Peace and Understanding Day, Assistant Governor and Past President Jonah Ormond spoke on peace from the perspective of Rotary International. He emphasized that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, opportunity, and service to others. He highlighted that Rotary\u2019s programmes, ranging from community development and youth leadership to international exchanges, are all rooted in fostering dialogue, cooperation, and sustainable peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a call to action, Assistant Governor Ormond urged members to renew their personal and collective commitment to peace and understanding. He encouraged Rotarians to embody Rotary\u2019s values in their daily lives by promoting tolerance, dialogue, and friendship within their homes, workplaces, and communities. He further challenged clubs to intentionally integrate peacebuilding into every service project, noting that all initiatives, whether focused on health, youth, or vulnerable families, can help foster understanding.<\/p>

He also stressed the importance of engaging community partners, including schools, churches, and youth groups, in honest conversations about conflict resolution and harmony, reminding those present that peace begins with dialogue. \u201cIf we each take up this charge,\u201d he noted, \u201cthen together, we can make Antigua and Babruda and indeed the world more peaceful, more connected, and more compassionate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Peace and Understanding Day commemorates the founding of Rotary and celebrates the organization\u2019s long-standing dedication to advancing international goodwill. The joint observance at Cashew Hill Moravian Church stands as a testament to the Rotary spirit in Antigua united in service, guided by shared values, and committed to building a more peaceful world.<\/p>
