In an exclusive interview, the company\u2019s chairman and CEO, Mehmet Kutman, outlined ambitious expansion plans spanning from Caribbean home porting initiatives to luxury passenger services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua Cruise Port<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

GPH\u2019s Caribbean strategy centres on establishing major home porting hubs, with Antigua leading the charge. Since acquiring the port in 2019, the company has transformed operations from zero home porting passengers to an anticipated 60,000\u201370,000 passengers, with projections reaching 250,000 within three years.<\/p>

\u201cWhen we took over Antigua, there were absolutely no home porting,\u201d Kutman explained. \u201cWe\u2019re finishing our home port terminal this November, and hopefully we will reach a quarter million home porting passengers within the next three years.\u201d<\/p>

The strategy extends beyond Antigua to St Lucia, where construction is underway for completion by mid-to-end of next year, and Puerto Rico, which already accommodates cruise vessels. Canary Islands success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

GPH\u2019s major achievement in the Canary Islands represents a significant infrastructure milestone. Las Palmas will become Europe\u2019s largest single cruise terminal at 16,000 sq m, handling an estimated 1.5\u20131.7m passengers annually, with 50% home porting capacity.<\/p>

The Canary Islands development emphasises environmental sustainability, incorporating solar panels, recycling materials, and eco-friendly construction. \u201cI personally care a lot about environmental compliance while supporting industry growth,\u201d Kutman noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latin America: the next frontier<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As the global cruise industry seeks new horizons, Global Ports Holding is casting its strategic gaze firmly on Latin America. Colombia is our primary target in Central America,\u201d Kutman revealed, signalling a carefully calibrated approach to a region brimming with untapped potential, where innovative port management can truly transform local economies and passenger experiences.<\/p>

The company\u2019s Latin American strategy reads like a carefully plotted maritime chart. Mexico\u2019s ports emerge as \u2018very, very relevant,\u2019 while Brazil, Honduras, and emerging markets represent promising new territories. \u201cWe are exploring what to do, how to do it,\u201d explained Kutman.<\/p>

Luxury market disruption<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The luxury segment, projected to reach 15\u201325m passengers by 2028, represents a particularly promising frontier for GPH. Kutman is personally leading the development of a white glove concierge service targeting ultra-high-end passengers. \u201cThe ship may be extremely luxurious, but people paying $15,000\u201330,000 per person for seven-day cruises are not currently receiving the level of service they deserve (in port),\u201d asserted Kutman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service will feature discreet boarding, seamless transit, personalised services, and name recognition, private transfers, and exclusive shore excursions including private access to leading cultural and historic attractions, like Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. \u201cIt will be the most difficult project yet undertaken by Kutman. It will be very different from what anybody has ever seen. They\u2019ll be treated better than first-class airplane passengers,\u201d Kutman revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expected to launch mid-2026, the service will operate on a limited-supply model. \u201cThe demand will be higher than the supply,\u201d Kutman emphasised, comparing it to Herm\u00e8s bags where customers wait years for purchase opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community-first philosophy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Central to GPH\u2019s operations is community integration. \u201cCommunity outreach is very important and making sure we are integrated fully into the community; we are just the tenants wherever we go, the real landlords are the people,\u201d stated Kutman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company invests heavily in local scholarships, social programmes, and training, preferring local \u2018mom and pop\u2019 stores over international chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, GPH embraces a truly global yet locally rooted workforce, drawing talent from 18\u201320 different nationalities while maintaining a steadfast commitment to local leadership, with local staff prioritised and expatriate experts limited to initial transition periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s innovative cross-fertilisation programmes create unique opportunities for staff, enabling professionals to gain international experience by rotating between global locations. \u201cPeople from the Bahamas might fly to Barcelona, and from Barcelona to Jamaica,\u201d Kutman noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology solutions for overtourism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kutman\u2019s technological vision for port operations centres on intelligent solutions that enhance passenger experience while managing density. \u201cThis includes sophisticated software that allows real-time tracking of every vessel, with instant access to passenger numbers, ship movements, and operational metrics at any moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s AI-driven crowd management systems aim to transform how large passenger volumes interact with destinations, using innovative approaches like replacing traditional tour group flags with discreet earphones to reduce visual disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic expansion remains central to Kutman\u2019s approach to port acquisition. \u201cWe\u2019re not trying to be everywhere; we\u2019re trying to be somewhere meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mediterranean represents their stronghold, commanding an estimated 35\u201340% of cruise passengers. Caribbean expansion is ongoing, with the potential for two or three strategic acquisitions. The real frontier lies elsewhere. \u201cThe Far East and Mexican Riviera emerge as the next strategic priorities. \u2018There will be a limit eventually,\u2019 he acknowledged. \u2018The most important thing is ensuring that whatever we have becomes exactly the same to 100, 200 years down the road. One single bad mistake can impact the whole portfolio,\u2019 said Kutman, highlighting the delicate balance of global port management.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kutman\u2019s investment philosophy is straightforward: if we don\u2019t bring value to the destination, there\u2019s no need for us to be there. Ultimately, the most successful cruise industry players will be those who can balance operational efficiency, technological innovation, and a genuine commitment to both passenger experience and local communities. Kutman\u2019s worldview: the company\u2019s success can be measured by the tangible improvements made in the communities where they operate.
