CNN<\/strong>– President Donald Trump \u2013 who skipped\u00a0the Super Bowl<\/a>\u00a0and instead attended a watch party in Florida \u2013 denounced Bad Bunny\u2019s halftime performance as \u201ca slap in the face\u201d and said \u201cnobody understands a word\u201d\u00a0the Puerto Rican rapper<\/a>\u00a0was saying.<\/p>

\u201cThe Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn\u2019t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence,\u201d\u00a0Trump said<\/a>\u00a0in a post on Truth Social. \u201cThis \u2018Show\u2019 is just a \u2018slap in the face\u2019 to our Country, which is setting new standards and records every single day.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Mart\u00ednez Ocasio, rocked the stage Sunday night with many of his biggest hits, powerful imagery<\/a> and theatrical nods to songs and symbols<\/a> from throughout his Spanish-language catalog. Several huge stars, including Lady Gaga<\/a> and Ricky Martin, made appearances.<\/p>

During the performance, Bad Bunny delivered a unifying message<\/a>, expanding the meaning of \u201cGod bless America\u201d to include all nations of the Americas \u2013 from Chile to Canada.<\/p>

\u201cGod bless America, whether it\u2019s Chile, Argentina,\u201d Bad Bunny said as he proceeded to list more than 20 nations in North and South America, and displayed the flags of many of them. He stood beside the US flag and the flag of Puerto Rico, a US territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also displayed a message written on a football that read: \u201cTogether we are America.\u201d<\/p>

The president criticized both the language and choreography of the performance. \u201cNobody understands a word this guy is saying,\u201d Trump wrote in his Truth Social, adding that the dancing was \u201cdisgusting,\u201d particularly for young children watching across the US and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the US has one of the highest numbers of Spanish speakers of any nation in the world. About 41.8 million people in the country speak Spanish at home \u2013 roughly 13.5% of the population \u2013 according to Census Bureau data<\/a> from 2019. Some studies estimate the number of US Spanish speakers could be closer to 48.6 million, as of 2015, if non-Hispanic people and undocumented people are included, according to a report from Instituto Cervantes.<\/p>

Trump\u2019s criticism is hardly surprising. He previously said<\/a> Bad Bunny, was a \u201cterrible choice\u201d for the halftime show.<\/p>

One of the most-streamed artists in the world, Bad Bunny performed just a week after making Grammys history<\/a>, winning album of the year for \u201cDeb\u00ed Tirar M\u00e1s Fotos (I Should Have Taken More Photos),\u201d the first Spanish-language album to claim the Recording Academy\u2019s top prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony, he delivered a pointed political message in protest of recent actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement amid Trump\u2019s sweeping immigration crackdown nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accepting the award for best m\u00fasica urbana album, Bad Bunny began his speech: \u201cBefore I say thanks to God, I\u2019m gonna say: ICE out!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not savage, we\u2019re not animals, we\u2019re not aliens,\u201d he added. \u201cWe are humans and we are Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Controversy surrounded Bad Bunny\u2019s halftime performance since his selection was announced <\/a>in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conservative circles had opposed his appearance on sports\u2019 biggest stage and the conservative non-profit group Turning Point USA offered a counter-programming show with Kid Rock and other artists friendly with the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe All-American Halftime Show\u201d was filled with the imagery of country music, guitars and the group\u2019s founder, the late Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bad Bunny halftime performance made plenty of other people happy \u2013 from fans in Santa Clara, California, to watch parties in Puerto Rico and across the country \u2013 where social media buzzed about the artistry on display and the slew of stars who made cameos during the performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
