Dr. Alafea Stevens has been elected president of the Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc. (MAAB), returning to the role after previously leading the organization for two consecutive terms.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Stevens is an emergency medicine physician with more than a decade of clinical, administrative and professional leadership experience. She earned her medical degree from the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba in 2010 and completed her internship through St. George\u2019s University at St. George\u2019s General Hospital in Grenada. She later obtained a postgraduate diploma in emergency medicine from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her clinical leadership was shaped during her tenure at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where she served as head of the Emergency Room Department. She later transitioned into national health administration and currently serves as a senior medical officer in the Ministry of Health\u2019s Medical Division. In that role, she has acted as both medical officer of health and deputy chief medical officer.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Beyond her clinical duties, Stevens serves on several statutory and advisory bodies, including the Antigua and Barbuda Pharmacy Council, the Medical Benefits Scheme Board and the national Formulary Committee. Her professional advocacy within MAAB includes service as secretary-treasurer from 2018 to 2020, followed by two terms as president from 2020 to 2024.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Stevens is also active in public health and community service. She is an honorary member of Antigua and Barbuda Breast Friends and has supported free breast cancer screening initiatives for more than a decade. Her regional and international work includes serving as Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s country lead for the Howard University Caribbean Clinicians Community of Practice Project and participation in the World Organization of Family Doctors\u2019 working group for women and family medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also represents Antigua and Barbuda on Caribbean Medical TV, where she highlights shared regional health challenges and emerging solutions.<\/p>

Her contributions have been recognized with multiple MAAB awards, including honors for outstanding contribution to medicine and volunteer work, community service, and leadership and professionalism.<\/p>\n
