Antigua and Barbuda to secure CDB loan to fund education upgrades<\/strong><\/p>

Cabinet has approved a loan agreement with the Caribbean Development Bank to fund what officials described as a major education upgrade project, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said at the post-Cabinet briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merchant said Cabinet \u201capproved a request by the minister for education, sports and creative industries, the Hon. Daryl Matthew, to enter into a loan agreement with the Caribbean Development Bank, CDB, to finance the education enhancement and quality improvement project.\u201d<\/p>

He described the initiative as \u201ca major national initiative\u201d aimed at \u201cstrengthening the quality, resilience, and inclusiveness of our education system.\u201d<\/p>

Merchant said the approved loan is expected to support \u201cwide-ranging investments\u201d across the sector, including \u201ceducation infrastructure, institutional strengthening, teacher training, and capacity building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the decision \u201cbuilds on the successful implementation\u201d of Basic Education Project II, which he said is \u201csoon-to-be-concluded,\u201d and has delivered \u201csignificant improvements,\u201d including \u201crehabilitation of schools and extensions, and teacher development and also policy reform.\u201d<\/p>

Merchant said the earlier programme is \u201cnearing completion this coming June,\u201d and the new project is intended to \u201csustain and expand on the gains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under EQUIP, he said \u201cmajor infrastructure expansion rehabilitation and repair works will be undertaken\u201d at Antigua Girls\u2019 High School, Ottos Comprehensive School, Richards Academy and Golden Grove Primary School, adding that the work will provide \u201cmore than 93,000 square feet of additional learning space.\u201d<\/p>

He said the project also includes \u201cthe procurement of furniture and equipment,\u201d and \u201ctraining of teachers in specialized training in special education, mathematics, sciences, modern languages, and technical and vocational education and training.\u201d<\/p>
