More than 500 derelict homes have been identified across several urban communities, Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/strong> said, citing the results of a recent government survey that underscores the scale of urban decay in and around St. John\u2019s.<\/p>

\u201cI don\u2019t know if you\u2019re all aware that we just did a recent survey,\u201d Browne told the audience. \u201cBetween Point, Grace Farm \u2026 over 500 derelict homes. No, we can\u2019t live like that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described the structures as \u201cproperties that are practically uninhabitable,\u201d adding that they are \u201cold, broken-down buildings, uninhabitable, nobody living in them.\u201d<\/p>

Browne said many of the abandoned properties are owned by individuals living overseas, noting that \u201cmany of them, the property owners, they live in the United States or they live in North America and Europe,\u201d while residents at home are left in \u201cless than satisfactory conditions.\u201d <\/p>

The prime minister said the findings reinforce the government\u2019s push to remove derelict buildings and accelerate urban renewal, particularly within older communities such as Point and Grace Farm, which form part of the capital\u2019s wider urban corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
