When Regret Becomes Recruitment: A Dangerous Message to Caribbean Girls by Brent Simon<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There is a part of this conversation we keep dodging, and it\u2019s time to stop pretending it doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the Caribbean, there are women who know\u2014deep down\u2014that their health has declined beyond easy repair. They live with chronic pain, limited mobility, medication dependency, and silent fear about the future. Many will admit privately that if they could rewind time, they would make different choices.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

But instead of warning the next generation, too many are doing the opposite, because misery loves company.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

They are encouraging younger women to follow the same path\u2014to eat recklessly, reject discipline, dismiss movement, and frame concern as hatred. Not out of confidence, but out of something far more troubling: unresolved regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t empowerment.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s recruitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When someone reaches a point where change feels overwhelming\u2014or impossible\u2014there\u2019s a psychological temptation to normalize the damage. If everyone joins you, then the consequences feel less personal. If the lifestyle becomes a \u201cmovement,\u201d then the mistake becomes a statement.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s where the real danger lies.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You can see it not only in the messaging, but in the attitude: hostility toward health conversations, aggression toward fitness, mockery of effort, and outright contempt for anyone who chooses differently. Exercise becomes \u201cself-hate.\u201d Nutrition becomes \u201cselling out.\u201d Personal responsibility becomes \u201ccolonial thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s not cultural pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s defensiveness wearing a costume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young Caribbean girls are absorbing this\u2014watching women who are clearly unwell tell them, with absolute certainty, \u201cThis is fine. This is freedom. This is power.\u201d Meanwhile, the same women struggle to walk long distances, depend on daily medication, and quietly fear what the next medical visit will reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s call it what it is: misguided mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a moral line between loving yourself where you are and encouraging others to damage themselves so you don\u2019t feel alone. One is healing. The other is selfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And no\u2014this isn\u2019t about blaming women. It\u2019s about stopping the cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because when older generations pass down unhealthy habits as identity, they\u2019re not preserving culture\u2014they\u2019re exporting illness. They\u2019re turning preventable suffering into inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Caribbean already carries a heavy health burden. We don\u2019t need elders\u2014intentionally or not\u2014training the next generation to repeat it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wisdom is not pretending your scars are trophies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wisdom is warning others where the road collapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are struggling with your health, you deserve compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But compassion does not require silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it certainly does not require recruiting young women into the same struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our girls deserve honesty, not ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deserve examples of strength, not rationalized decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deserve futures that are longer, freer, and healthier than the present we are normalizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This editorial will offend some people. That\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truth usually does\u2014right before it forces growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the real betrayal of Caribbean women is not telling them they\u2019re beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s telling them that health no longer matters.<\/p>\n
