Greene Says Barbuda\u2019s Development Targets High-End Tourism, Not Mass Market<\/strong><\/p>

Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene<\/a> said Barbuda\u2019s development strategy is focused on high-end tourism rather than mass tourism, positioning the sister island differently from regional competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Government in Motion, Greene said Barbuda\u2019s airport expansion and related investments are designed to support an upscale tourism model aligned with international luxury travel.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s high-end,\u201d Greene said. \u201cWe\u2019re not going for this mass tourism that other countries go for. We\u2019re going for high-end tourism.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He said developments on Barbuda are attracting visitors who arrive via private aircraft and yachts, creating a distinct tourism niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost of the persons who are part of the PLH project, for example, have their own private jets, their own yachts,\u201d Greene said. \u201cSo it\u2019s a different level of tourism bringing benefit to Antigua and Barbuda, in this instance Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Greene said the growth of Barbuda\u2019s tourism sector is reshaping its role within the national economy and narrowing long-standing economic disparities between the two islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything commercial happened in Antigua,\u201d he said. \u201cBarbuda had to come to Antigua to do all the shopping. Everything really was around Antigua.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He said that dynamic is changing as development accelerates on Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow we are seeing equity, we are seeing development in Barbuda which matches or mirrors, in some instances eclipses what\u2019s happening in Antigua,\u201d Greene said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that current projects on Barbuda exceed most existing developments on the mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat PLH project alone in Barbuda is superior to anything we have on Antigua, save and except for Jumby Bay,\u201d Greene said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greene said improved air access supports the island\u2019s upscale tourism ambitions and allows direct travel by private aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSmall jets, as we speak, can land directly in Barbuda,\u201d he said. \u201cThat itself means a whole lot to the aviation industry.\u201d<\/p>\n
