The newly opened cruise terminal in St John\u2019s is expected to create new jobs and offer opportunities for local entrepreneurs, artisans and performers, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne.<\/p>

Speaking at the terminal\u2019s official opening on Thursday, Mr Browne said the facility would provide income-generating opportunities for Antiguans and Barbudans, particularly in commerce and the creative industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said local workers were already employed at the terminal, with more jobs expected as shops, kiosks and other amenities begin operating in the coming months.<\/p>

The terminal forms part of a wider upland development project, due for completion by July 2026, which will include retail outlets, dining facilities and a day club with a pool. Officials say these facilities will require additional staff and create space for local businesses.<\/p>

Gasper George, general manager of Antigua Cruise Ports, said the development was designed to integrate local entrepreneurs into cruise tourism. He confirmed that a call had been issued for Antiguan business owners to submit proposals to operate stores at the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose-built terminal, covering more than 10,000 square feet, replaces earlier homeporting operations that were run from a temporary market tent when cruise turnaround services began in 2022.<\/p>

Antigua Cruise Ports currently employs about 70 people, a figure expected to more than double when the full development is completed. The project is part of a US$60m investment by Global Ports Holding, which partnered with the government in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and Barbuda is expected to welcome about one million cruise passengers this year, almost double the number recorded before the partnership. The government says the expansion is aimed at ensuring tourism growth translates into improved living standards for citizens.<\/p>
