The Learning and Development Unit has opened its 2026 programme with two Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions, focusing on evidence-based practice and equitable healthcare delivery.<\/p>

The sessions were facilitated by Dr Paul Saphier and Dr Nicole Saphier and addressed key challenges in modern medicine, including acute stroke care and breast cancer detection in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One presentation examined stroke management, with particular attention to time-sensitive interventions such as mechanical thrombectomy. It explored how advanced treatments can be adapted for both resource-rich and resource-limited settings, highlighting system readiness and decision-making at the bedside.<\/p>

The second session focused on breast cancer, reviewing screening strategies, diagnostic pathways and patient outcomes, with data and trends relevant to the local population.<\/p>

Organisers said the discussions aimed to bridge international best practice with local realities, placing emphasis on equity in access to care and improving patient outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, the Learning and Development Unit said the opening sessions reflected a deliberate approach to professional development, prioritising clinically relevant education that can be directly applied in patient care.<\/p>

Medical Director of Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, Dr Shivon Belle-Jarvis, commended healthcare professionals who participated, describing continuous professional development as essential to strengthening the health system.<\/p>
