Several residents have raised the alarm on a spate of hacked bank accounts and are wondering why neither the financial institution nor the Police are alerting the public to the danger.<\/p>

Victims tell REAL News that the sophisticated scam points to some level of \u201cinside\u201d collaboration, although different ruses have been used to steal thousands and thousands of dollars from their accounts.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In one instance reported, the fraudster posed as the customer agent of a mobile-service provider, alleging that its system was being upgraded and confirmation of certain information was needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although monthly payments to that company are made from the victim\u2019s bank account, the person insists that no account number or password was requested or shared with the bogus caller.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Still, the account was drained \u2013 in a series of \u201ctransfers\u201d that amounted to over $20,000 and coincided with the time of the phone call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are other instances of reported losses of $50,000 and more, as both modest depositors\u2019 and high-earners\u2019 accounts have been raided.<\/p>

In another complaint, almost $4,000 was withdrawn from a customer\u2019s account \u2013 but with no corresponding call from any alleged cell-phone company: Just a mysterious transfer of funds purporting to be \u201cpayment\u201d for services such as \u201cinsurance.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Changes to this person\u2019s email address and password \u2013 made directly at the bank \u2013 did not protect the client from a subsequent unauthorized electronic withdrawal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has bewildered those who have been robbed in this manner is the Police\u2019s \u201claid-back approach\u201d to their reports of these cybercrimes and the authorities\u2019 failure to alert the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut then again, look at who is supposed to be running that department,\u201d one critic says, expressing no confidence in the matter being solved without \u201coutside technological help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is of concern, too, is the length of time it is taking the bank to conclude its reported \u201cinvestigation\u201d into these thefts \u2013 particularly since the victims are convinced \u201cit\u2019s an inside job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worse, the customers do not know whether they will be reimbursed for their losses, as the bank\u2019s insurance coverage is not known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut the bank has an obligation to replace that money,\u201d one outraged depositor tells our newsroom. \u201cIf I give you my money for safekeeping and you lose it, it\u2019s not for me to take the loss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the uncertainty of their situation, the victims are sounding the alarm; urging residents to be extremely wary of telephone callers purporting to represent businesses; and warning them against giving out sensitive information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCrime so high already,\u201d a victim grumbles, \u201cand now it look like you have to go hide your money inside your mattress\u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
